Have you ever heard of a kookaburra who couldn’t laugh?
It’s inconceivable – they’re called Laughing Jackasses
– it’s part of what a kookaburra is. My parents and brothers and sisters were all great laughers and we would often sit on a branch of a very high gum tree and make the bush ring with the sound of our laughter. Us all, that is, except for me. I would open my beak wide and what would come out? A cacophony of croaks. No hooohooohooo haaahaaahaaas for me. It was abysmal – it was embarrassing – what was I to do?
I don’t know why I wasn’t able to laugh. I had a normal loving upbringing with two parents who looked after us all dotingly in the nest. There was no shortage of food for
