Chapter 1: Recalibrate your mind as a travel baseball coach
They’re Still Kids-
Before we get into any of the nitty gritty details on how to become the best coach you can, we need to set the record straight. No matter what age group you are coaching, 8U-17U, they are still kids. Mistakes are going to be made, and that’s ok. You cannot go into this thinking that just because they are travel ball players they will soak up everything right away. It’s a process, and patience must come with it. Now I’m not saying there won’t be times that a good natured screaming won’t be necessary. However, temper the urge to lash out at every misstep. But also let them know that when you yell, it is because you care and know just how good they can be. Tell them at the end of the day, if I stop yelling at you it is because I have given up on you. That usually puts them at ease, and they know that you care when you put it in those terms.
Impart More Than Baseball Skills-
If all you can bring to the table for your particular team is how to teach mechanics, or fielding techniques, please don’t coach this game. I know that might sound blunt, but it’s the truth. You’re dealing with kids still, and they have so much more to learn to become well rounded young men than hitting homeruns. You need to be conscious to teach them morality, integrity, ethics, and how to hold themselves accountable. Their mindset is something that is still very moldable at this age. Understand that when you come on as a coach, you are agreeing to these unwritten rules. Something that I have always tried to impart on to my kids is to never stop learning. Also be looking to pick up a good book about something that interests them. It doesn’t have to be about baseball, but however you can keep them learning and growing as human beings is a win.
Participation Trophies-
THROW THEM ALL OUT. Seriously. You are playing on a travel ball team, save that nonsense for park district baseball. At this age, these kids need to
