    INTRODUCTION

    STYLER- The African stick fighter

    The African Series

This book is written to honour and to share the traditions of African culture. The Author Z.N Mkhwanazi wanted to share the African tribe stories, shared throughout generations in African families. Stick fighting is used by tribes as a way of celebration for festivities and ceremonies.

The book is dedicated to the hero’s of stick fighting uShaka kaSenzangakhona, former president and philanthropist Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and will share the story of African stick fighting through imagination and the journey of Styler, a wise young man from Mhlazeni, who moves his feet to the beat of the African drum.

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

To all readers thank you for purchasing this book, my loved ones who supported me from day one and believed that I had the potential to produce such work. Thanking President Phakamani Ntombela for taking the time to go through my manuscript and editing the isiZulu words.

At times sleeping at the wee hours of the morning had become a norm, trying to keep my head straight in the process, while it shifted itself to the left and right. Of course, not forgetting the writer's block as a first writer, I had no clue there was such a phrase, at times I would go blank, at other times have insomnia and start writing for 6 hours without slowing down. It took a whole year to compile this book, with all the research and writing and re-writing, hoping that I have done justice to the tribes I have written about in Africa and wishing to one day travel to all the tribes.

Sometimes you have to be the party starter for others to join in, some jump in when the hype starts and some hold back in fear of their two left feet, as the song comes together and everybody starts dancing, some will be in the frontlines BUT just remember that you started it all.

    CHAPTER ONE

    STYLER IS BORN

It’s a Saturday weekend, everyone is off work. The first Saturdays are always different from the rest, so it’s been said. The streets are quiet, people are inside their houses getting ready for the stick fighting festival in Mhlazeni. A little pip inside their wooden door holes and windows, your eyes would be greeted with a fest of colours all over the room. Traditional attires scatted on the bed, ubuhlali (African beads) being fitted by women and amabheshu (African bottoms with animal skin) being cleaned with the bristles of a brush.

A young woman named Madi is back in the town of Mhlazeni hills, crosses paths with this young man at a cultural celebration and introduced herself to him and said: My name is Madi, I hear you organise these stick fighting celebrations throughout Mhlazeni.

Hi Madi, yes, I am someone who is very fascinated by our tribal traditions and rituals, that’s why I decided to start hosting the Mhlazeni stick fighting championship.

Mhlazeni stick fighting championship would take place every year and without fail there will man and woman dancing Indlamu (Indlamu- A word used by the Zulu tribe to describe a form of routine dance) where men assemble in one line with their shields and spears.

Everything is so well coordinated. It is a first, ever since I left Mhlazeni.

Wait until you see what the actual event has in store for you.

    Which is what exactly?

Ahh, I can’t give away the secret so easily.

Now Ziko, do you want me to beg you to share the rest of the secret?

Ziko lifts her face again and gives Madi a little smile.

We will just have to wait and see.

The crowd opens the way for the contenders to walk through, followed by iduna and the Mc of the event.

Sanibonani mpakathi (Greetings to all community members), We welcome you to our annual stick fighting festival, where all pants get a thorn, dust rises from the ground, and the community utters African praises. My name is bukhosi, and I will be your host for today. As the saying goes ‘qhude qhude maniki niki zindala zombili. Let the fights begin.

We have fourteen stick fighters and seven rounds to battle until we narrow it down to the semi-finals and the decider."

The battles go on, as all stick fighters bring on their ‘A’ game, the crowds are entertained, and one of the herd boys screams out Hawu wamushaya, and starts to break out in song to keep the masses going.

    Song:

    Wamu-sha-ya

    Hawu wamu shaya

    Ethi uyavika

    Awu wamushaya

    Awu Walibeka ethi uyagoba

    Wamu sha-ya bo

    Wamu shaya

    Awu wayivika ethi uyagadla

    Awu wamu-sha-ya boh.

As the battles go on everyone is in the moment routing for their contenders. However, Madi seems to be in a moment different from the rest of the crowd.

    Ziko. She calls out.

    Yes, Cuz.

Who is the M.c (Master of the ceremony)?

Oh, I see you have found the rest of the secret. She chuckles a bit...

That right there is Bukhosi, he is the event coordinator, 2 years ago he started hosting annual festivals in Mhlazeni, and it is also said that he hosts many other stick fighting festivals in other provinces. So what else do would you like to know? Is he engaged, married? Does he have 2.0 kids? Is he Single, single happy and or single and available? Which one is it? Do really want to know? Ziko laughs...

Madi looks at her with a straight face Really, Ziko. Yes, and I am a bear who has come to fest on all the meat. Who is he?

Hawu (Hey) weren't you listening; I have told you all about him.

No man, I wanted to know if he is from around here.

Yes, just like you, he from the area, arrived with his family after you left for college and left soon after his arrival to fulfill his studies.

Oh wow, you really gave me the whole bio, didn’t you?

Ooh cum’on, you know you wanted it.

Out, Mhlazeni takes this round. The Induna shouts out.

The battles are intense the whole community is waiting to see who will take the championship. It has come down to the semifinals, amaqikiza (Women advisors) sweep the crawl circling
