    My Favorite Bible Verses

    1

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.

    MATTHEW 11:28–30

In Jesus’ day, Jewish people grew weary under the heavy load of expectations imposed on them by the Pharisees. In today’s culture, we struggle with overbooked schedules, problems that threaten our peace, and the stress of everyday living. Jesus warned that we would have troubles (John 16:33), but He invites us to a different way of living. In an agricultural society, everyone understood a yoke went across the necks of two farm animals and connected them to the plow they were to pull.¹ A yoke didn’t eliminate the burden, but it made the weight limit appropriate for the animals’ abilities. In the same way, all Christ-followers will carry burdens, but we aren’t called to take a load that is too heavy for us. Jesus invites us to trust Him with our troubles, and He promises rest for our souls when we do.

Father, help me to be faithful to fulfill the tasks You have given me. Please give me the strength to do my part. I will trust You to do what I cannot.

    2

If I say, My foot slips, Your mercy, O LORD, will hold me up. In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul.

    PSALM 94:18–19

The Scriptures make it clear that many biblical writers struggled with fear and anxiety. In the Psalms, we read about a variety of human emotions, and anxiety was a frequent offender. It’s notable that the writers of Scripture did not attempt to hide their anxiety. Instead, they cried out to God. In Psalm 94, the psalmist recalls how God dealt faithfully with him during a time of intense suffering (v. 18). Remembering God’s faithfulness stirred his trust that God would be faithful to help in the future. Anxiety is a cruel tormentor, but it has the potential to drive us into a deeper relationship with God. It’s one thing to read about God’s love and consolation, and entirely another to experience it in a time of need. Undoubtedly, anxiety is a burden, but the psalmist was able to say of his history with God, Your comforts delight my soul (v. 19).

Father, I pray You will equip me to trust more and worry less. Calm my fears and increase my faith because You fulfill Your promises.

    3

Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad.

    PROVERBS 12:25

Stress can cause a variety of medical issues, but nothing feels quite as hopeless as a heavy heart. Scripture teaches that a kind word is an antidote for a heart that
