The Memoirs of Sixy
()
About this ebook
When Mrs Stockton’s cat disappeared, Sixy offered to use his detective skills to solve The Case of the Missing Moggie. But he had a rival on the job – our class bully. In Two Boosts, Shopleaving, and Merry Christmas, I give three more painful memories of his cases.

I retired (early) and started a new career as a writer. I wrote short stories and articles. Some were published; some won prizes; some sank without trace.Having heard my stories, two friends suggested I should write for children. I’d never thought of that, although I’d spent my first career communicating with young people – as a Chemistry teacher, and running clubs for badminton, chess, table tennis and hillwalking.I tried writing for young people – and I loved it. It became my main occupation. I sent samples to publishers. One asked to see a complete story. In excitement, I sent it off. Then nothing. After four months, I rang, and was told the manuscript was being considered: I would be notified. Then more nothing. Now, after eight years, I no longer rush to the door when the letter box rattles. But I kept writing the stories because I enjoyed it so much. Until, in late 2013, I learned I could publish my stories and games as e-books. Since then, I’ve been polishing and issuing some of them. I hope everyone enjoys reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.Check out the series:C: Charades – party game – a new twist to the traditional game.D: Diagags – party game – gags written as plays for two people.M: My Story – novels – classical stories, told by the heroes.O: One-Offs – party game – guess the titles, not quite the classical ones.P: Pop Tales – short stories – inspired by 60s and 70s hit songs.Q: Quote-Outs – word games – can you deduce the missing words?S: Inside Story – novels – a boy’s adventures inside classical stories.T: Troubleshooters – novels – space adventures for young people.

THE CASE OF THE MISSING MOGGIE
I went into Sixy’s workshop. Sixy! What happened to you?
I fell off my bike.
Don’t give me that! What really happened?
Sixy’s face was a mess. His left eye was black; he had a red bruise on his forehead and scrapes on his hands. He was wearing his old specs – a sign his good ones were in for repair – again.
Shush, BB!
he said. I’ll tell you if you promise to keep it quiet. Let’s sit outside. We’ll see if anyone’s coming.
His back garden has two stone sheds – his dad calls them outhouses – built against the wall that divides his garden from Mrs Stockton’s. One of these sheds has a weird little back room which doesn’t have a door to the garden. After a lot of pleading, Sixy had persuaded his dad to let him use that side room as a workshop. We’d cleared a lot of junk out of it, but we still had a lot to clear.
As Sixy fitted a padlock to the door, I said, That’s new.
Yes,
he said. The lock on that door is old. Any key would work it. I must keep my workshop secure. It has my equipment and secret files.
Sixy thinks he’s the world’s greatest detective. His equipment was a magnifying glass (which he usually carried) and some empty boxes, ready for specimens. The secret files
was a folder with his own notes. I didn’t comment.
As we sat on the garden seat outside the door, I said, Tell me.
Groaning, Sixy sat. It was Bonnar and his mates.
Oh!
I understood. About two years ago, Andrew Bonnar’s family moved into the house on the other side of Mrs Stockton’s. Andrew was put in our class at school, and organised the toughs into a gang which bullied everybody else. What happened?
I was on my way home from school. Bonnar and his gang stopped me. They asked me about a football game.
The local derby on Saturday. We’re playing Salcombe. Haven’t you noticed? Everybody’s wearing red and white.
Yes. I knew a game was coming up, and everyone thinks it’s important. Bonnar and his gang were all wearing those red and white scarves. But, when he asked me about it, I didn’t know what he was talking about.
He probably asked you what team you support. He would call it an insult if you didn’t say you were mad keen about Helmsford.
"That was probably the reason. He and his friends pushed me around. Broke
