    Lisa Wingate has become one of my favorite authors- she has a way of pulling you into the story and making you feel as though you are a part of it. I cannot put into words how this novel moved me but I feel as though I’ll never be the same.

Introducing The Book of Lost Friends

Wingate's inspiration to write 'The book of lost friends,' came from a reader who informed her about a not so famous piece of history. After the Civil War, Lost Friends ads were run in the South-western Christian Advocate, a Methodist newspaper, which was circulated widely to priests, subscribers as well as post offices. The advertisements appealed to the ministers to read the ads aloud to members of the church to help family members locate their lost relatives. In most cases, the separation was due to slavery. People were sold to many buyers as slaves resulting in tearing the families apart. As the author began to research the subject, she was drawn to write a story of families suffering from pain and despair because of greed and cruelty.

The author has set the story in alternating timelines. It opens in 1875, where the lead protagonist is a girl named Hannie. She is an eighteen-year-old former slave, who resides on a Louisiana plantation. The plantation is called Goswood Grove, and she was detained at the plantation against her will. Hannie hopes to own the land with her fellow companions, also former slaves, after having toiled on it for ten years. As per the contract with the estate owner Gossett, called 'Old Mister' by the slaves, he is to turn over the land parcel's ownership to the slaves.
