    Chapter I : Intro

Where does the Tarot Come from?

The Tarot originated as a card game (commissioned by Italian Nobles) in Northern Italy around the early 15th century.

The game was similiar to Bridge. The Deck had four suits, a king, Queen, Knight, and page, and 22 major Arcanas

It was not originally intended to be a divination tool, but it was soon discovered to be quite accurate in predicting the future.

Some say that the true origins are Egyptian and a prototype of these cards travelled their way through the Muslim countries only to be introduced to the Italians later on. There is no concrete proof of this, though.

Originally these cards were hand painted or drawn, however, after new innovations in printing techniques these cards became quite popular throughout Europe.

By the mid 16th century a deck called the Marseilles Tarot was mass printed which looks very similar to our current standard decks

The Roman Catholic Church referred to the cards as The Devil's Bible or the Devil's Picture Book.

As a side note the gypsies greatly influenced the use of tarot through their migration throughout Europe. They provided divination services which introduced and exposed the power of the cards to many different people and countries.

Later in France the cards became more popular when they were mass produced in the late 1700's with a guidebooks printed to instruct how to use them as well.

Our modern deck and the system I use is called the Rider Waite deck. The illustrations are by Pamela Coleman-Smith and this deck has by far been the most popular deck since its publication in 1910. It is really the standard and a go to deck for all beginners.

2 - What is the difference between Tarot Cards and Oracle Cards?

The difference is in the way they are structured. Oracle cards don't necessarily have an order or a structure about them. They can range from having specific key words or phrases attached to the individual card with an image closely associated with the word, to being completely abstract without any meaning except the one you choose to give them.

Tarot cards have a structure and an order to them. There is a hierarchy of major and minor Arcanas, court cards, and smaller cards each having a specific meaning. Depending on the cards and the way these cards land in the spread there could be many different interpretations.

3 - How is the Tarot structured?

The Tarot has 78 total cards.

22 Major Arcana cards and 56 Minor Arcana cards.

Arcana means secrets, so major Arcana translates into the large moments in our lives and minor are the smaller daily experiences.
