    Dedication

This book is dedicated to all who enjoyed my Omer Count passages on social media and encouraged me to share these kinds of daily writings. For you, I pulled Jewish wisdom from the vaults to make it relevant in today’s world. All my love to my family, my beloved wife and our children for their unwavering devotion. Endless gratitude to my dearest of friends, especially my Wellesley network and friends of faith, who have helped me birth this work by encouraging expression of these understandings of Torah. Many thanks to my grandmother, who taught me how to delight in Torah study, and to my mother and God for creating and supporting me.

    About the Author

    Introduction

I have always regarded the month of Elul as the secular month of December. It is the last month of the calendar year before the New Year. And, just as we reflect on our lives and prepare ourselves to make new year’s resolutions in the secular year, the Jewish New Year calls us to reflect upon our lives and resolve to improve as well. The month of Elul is a heightened time to do this sacred work.

I wrote this book as a guide to help individuals reflect upon their past year and begin a process of transformation— for good. It pulls from Torah, which is the sacred literature of the Jewish people, across the ancient, medieval, and modern eras. Nevertheless, it resonates with relevance to the universal human experience. You may use it each of the 29 days of the month of Elul before the Jewish New Year of Rosh HaShanah, during the month
