Chapter
1
Nora stood up through the car’s sunroof, a camera in her hand.
This is a terrible idea!
yelled her sister, Livi, who was driving.
It’s a great idea!
Nora yelled back. She wanted to capture the winding, foggy coastal highway. She pointed her lens and steadied her camera. The sound of the ocean crashing against the black cliffs drifted up from far below.
The fog is perfect, she thought as she filmed.
Her application to a film school in New York required a silent fifteen-minute film. It was due in two weeks. She’d been working on different versions of it for three months, but she didn’t like any of them. This road trip with Livi was her last chance to shoot some new scenes.
Get back inside,
Livi yelled from below.
One more minute,
Nora yelled back.
Through the fog, a pair of headlights appeared, accompanied by the deep hum of a distant engine. Nora lifted her camera to capture the approaching vehicle, and as she did the roar grew louder and louder. The headlights were suddenly surrounded by a huge, dark shape. A semi truck. It charged out of the fog. Then, suddenly, it veered over the center line. Livi blasted the horn.
Their car swerved right, nearly hitting the guardrail. Nora braced herself with one hand and held onto her camera with the other. She could smell the truck’s diesel fuel. Below, her sister’s free hand held tight to her jeans to keep her from flying out of the car.
The semi barreled past them, never stopping or even slowing. In a flash, it disappeared around the foggy bend.
Chapter
2
Nora slid back down through the sunroof and collapsed into her seat. She was surprised her camera was still in her hand. She was surprised she was still alive. After settling and redoing her seatbelt, she held up her camera and rewound the footage. The shot of the semi barreling through the fog was incredible.
I thought you were going to die!
Livi yelled. Her face was gray, her knuckles white. I feel like I’m going to throw up. I need to get out of this car.
She put on the blinker and began to pull over.
We can’t stop here,
said Nora. The shoulder was narrow and another car or truck could come through the fog and hit them from behind. Just keep going. There will be somewhere to turn off soon.
As they approached a bridge, the car’s headlights reflected off three white, wooden crosses stuck in the dirt off to the side. They marked a place where a car had crashed. Nora watched as they disappeared behind them.
That could’ve been us,
said Livi.
I don’t remember this road being so crazy,
said Nora. When they had planned this trip, she’d imagined the coastal highway being filled with amazing ocean views. Now she realized it was
