Sylvia was dreadfully lonely in the strange new house with their family belongings piled up on the floor. Her folks had just moved in that day, and Mom and Dad were away making all sorts of arrangements. She was supposed to stay strictly inside until they returned, and not to mess with anything. Dad had told her, meaning to behave. She had learned how to talk the talk readily enough, flashing her cute blue-eyed-blonde smile, but it was surprisingly difficult to walk the walk when she was alone. There were just so many ways she could get into trouble without even trying. She was even nicknamed Silly because of the silly things she was apt to do, like trying to give her teddy bear a hot bubble bath or jump off the bed using an open pillowcase as a parachute. Those particular endeavors had not worked out well.
She peered out the window. A bitter cold front was moving in; she could tell by the snow flurries and the way the passing people were all bundled up. That made the loneliness worse. She shivered, though it was warm inside. She was a naturally warm, outgoing person, and she
