      The Landscape of Dreams

      The country of dreams is near

      to some place that you may know.

      It has streets and houses you

      may have seen

      but its geography

      doesn’t quite add up.

      The atlas of dreams

      has pages

      that are blank

      or faded

      around the edges.

      The landscape of dreams is built

      of places half-forgotten.

      Its streets are formed

      partly from remembered places but

      its buses and trains roam far and do not

      connect with routes you know.

      The history of dreams contains

      long walks never taken on roads

      to forgotten country

      tramlines where the sea almost foams

      against their wheels

      railway stations and old rural roads

      that were never there

      or maybe are reshaped

      from old memories.

      The country of dreams is

      a place you may long to visit but

      your feet will never take you and

      there are no tickets you can buy.

      Yet sometimes in the night

      old places are revisited

      in that tantalising glimpse

      of times forgotten partly and

      of things that never were.
