    Introduction

Rescuing Princess Zelda from Hyrule Castle’s dungeon will only be the beginning of Link’s journey to save Hyrule in this prequel to the first two games of the Legend of Zelda franchise. Agahnim, an evil wizard, is determined to break a seal created hundreds of years ago by the Seven Sages to trap Ganon in the Dark World. Only the Master Sword can defeat Agahnim and only the chosen hero can wield the Master Sword. Link must prove he is worthy of becoming a hero if wishes to save Hyrule.

    History

Since its release in 1991, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past has sold over 4 million copies worldwide. Originally released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, the game has since been released for the GameBoy Advance and is digitally available on the Wii, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS. Both the original SNES version and the slightly altered GameBoy Advance version have earned high praise.

In 1990, Nintendo Power held a contest to select a fan to appear in an upcoming game. Chris Houlihan won and what has now been termed the Chris Houlihan Room appeared in A Link to the Past. The room contains 45 Blue Rupees and a telepathy tile on the northern wall. Chris telepathically speaks to Link by saying , I’m Chris Houlihan. This is my top secret room. Keep it between us, OK? Although the room is considered an easter egg, it also serves a purpose as crash prevention. Link will appear in the room when the game cannot detect which room he should be in due to an error in his Y coordinate.

The third game in the Legend of Zelda franchise, A Link to the Past innovated the traditional storyline of the Legend of Zelda by introducing alternate worlds, the Light World and the Dark World. Parallel universes would continue to be a recurring theme in later installations in the Zelda series.

Now famous, the Master Sword makes its first appearance along with several other new weapons. Heart Containers are split into four pieces, the first time in the series. Other improvements to the game include diagonal  movements, running, and sword animations. No longer does Link stab with his sword, but he can now swing. These changes make Link much easier to control and decreases the difficulty of combat.

Four Swords was later released with the GameBoy Advance remake of A Link to the Past. It features multiplayer gameplay where 2-4 players must solve dungeons as a team. Players compete to win the most Rupees and a special prize, though all Rupees are split evenly at the end of the dungeon.

    Basic Gameplay

A Link to the Past uses an angled, top-down perspective on all of its screens, abandoning the side scrolling action sequences seen in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. Even the overworld perspective remains the same as in dungeons, towns, and buildings. The larger overworld map can, instead, be viewed as a subscreen.

The experience system to level Link has been removed since Zelda II, but Heart Containers and the Magic Meter have remained. Instead of Spells, the Magic Meter is used in conjunction with items, such as the Lamp. Link can now gain Heart Containers by collecting four Pieces of Heart.

Items like Bombs and Arrows are no longer infinite. Instead, each individual item must be collected.

Link’s combat techniques have improved; he now swings his sword instead of stabbing. However, lightning bolts no longer shoot from the sword. Link can also now charge his sword to produce a Spin Attack.

Travel has also been improved. Link can now walk diagonally. Once the Pegasus Boots have been obtained, Link can even run. The Magic Mirror allows Link to travel between the Dark World and the Light World through a temporary portal. Permanent, but hidden warp locations can be found in both worlds. These methods of travel allow players to solve puzzles by warping between the Light and Dark Worlds.
