    Chapter One: Early Life

    ––––––––

Michael Jeffrey Jordan was born on February 17, 1963 in Brooklyn, New York. His father, James R. Jordan, Sr, worked as an equipment supervisor while his mother Deloris was in the banking industry. Michael was the fourth in a brood of five children, with two older brothers, Larry and James, an older sister, Deloris, and a younger sister named Roslyn. When Michael was a toddler, the family moved to Wilmington, North Carolina where he would spend much of his childhood years.

Michael developed a love for sports at quite a young age, and was already very competitive as a child. His favorite sports early on included basketball, football, and baseball. His father, James Sr., described Michael as a very active child who wanted to always win. What he does have is a competition problem. He was born with that ... the person he tries to outdo most of the time is himself, he said.

Enrolled at the Emsley A. Laney High School in Wilmington, Michael tried out for the sophomore basketball team but did not make the cut because he lacked height. Mike was about 5-10 at the end of 10th grade, no more than 5-11, described Fred Lynch, then the sophomore coach at the school.

Instead, he tried out for the junior basketball team and was accepted, where he honed his skills and impressed everyone with his game. Mike wasn't quite ready for the varsity as a 10th grader, and we all agreed he'd be better off getting playing time on the sophomore team than sitting on the bench with the varsity, Lynch explained in an article on the Chicago Tribune. I believe it worked out OK.

He always had talent—he was our best 9th grader and our best 10th grader, recalls Lynch. He played with a lot of heart, he had guard skills and he always had big, strong hands. By his junior year he shot up to 6-3, almost 6-4. All of a sudden you had size to go with that talent and drive. ... He just blossomed.

In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Todd Parker, who was a teammate of Michael’s on the sophomore team, described one game where the young Jordan made his mark. Final game of our sophomore year, we were playing down at Goldsboro. Mike stole the ball and had a breakaway, and he went in and dunked it—I mean he threw one down, Parker said. I believe that was the first competitive dunk of his life. We were like, 'Wow, where did that come from?’

Even back then, as Parker recalls, they knew Michael had the makings of a really good basketball player. "Then he comes back for junior year, he's a different guy, no longer skinny little Mike. He's jumping out of the gym.
