    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I have wished so many times that I had known the contents of this book when I was a little girl. My maternal grandparents died before I was born, and I never got to know my paternal grandparents. My mother’s mom died when she was a little girl, and since she and her siblings were left to raise themselves in a very closed environment, a lot of mistakes were made. In turn, my mother and her siblings did their best to raise their own children to be God-fearing, hardworking, and loving human beings.

I was blessed to have two sons, Calvin and Demetrius. They gave me seven granddaughters to whom I dedicate this book. It was being around these girls, goddaughters, and the young ladies that I’ve mentored that I learned how to be a girl—if you can imagine a girly-girl at age 60+.

I would like to give a big thanks to my mom, who is now deceased, for the sacrifices she made to give me life and teach me that I could be anything that I wanted to be. I am thankful for my father. He was in my life for only a short while, but he taught me how to be strong despite the odds and to understand a father’s love. I am thankful for my brother Milton because he loves me and encourages me to be the leader that I am today. I would like to thank my sisters: Nina, who showed me what a survivor looks like, is my nurturer, sister, and friend; and Freda, my younger sister, makes me think that I can do anything. Another big thanks to Mrs. Julia Bell, China Reed (deceased), and Georgena Sanchez – Kizzy, who instilled in me the true meaning of becoming a woman of purpose. They supported me as surrogate mothers and friends. I am also thankful for my BFFs from middle school to now Jackie Wilson, Rosita Robsono, Jackie Gray, and China Hall; Shawn McCorkle, a colleague turned BFF of more than 20 years; and to all of my Sister-Friends of A Will & Way, Inc. who have helped to shape my life over the years.

Thanks to everyone who had a hand in the proofing of this book including Georgena Sanchez, Shawn McCorkle, Rosemary Lee Potter, and Kia and Moiya Dixon.
