About this ebook

Janelle's grandfather is a broken man. Smart and caring, he still contains a sadness that never goes away—just like the permanent limp he won't discuss.

The limp he got in the South in the 1960s, when being a Black man falsely accused of a crime meant terrible things.

Then Janelle gets a wild, impossible chance to help her grandfather and right the injustice….

    Bringing Light Into Darkness

My grandfather is a broken man.

I don’t mean to say he’s angry or mean; in fact, most of the time he’s warm, funny, and caring. The love he and my grandmother share is heartwarming. They still hold hands everywhere they go, and he always kisses her before he leaves the room.

But there’s a sadness in him, one that doesn’t go away. Neither will the permanent limp from an injury he refuses to discuss.

He refuses to discuss any of it, really, so when I was in my teens and old enough to understand there was a dark place in him, I asked my grandmother. She looked me up and down, her brown eyes searching mine, and then nodded, as if agreeing that now was the right time.

She was sitting in her favorite club chair, the one covered with orange and black African Kente-print fabric. She ran a hand over her tight curls, which had long gone from black to grey, then picked up a bottle of her favorite hand lotion.
