PREFACE
Since some time, I had been planning to author and pen down my professional lessons from a lifetime journey of many decades of project management work which gave me once in a life time opportunity to work with the best companies to set up projects all over the world and build solid infrastructure. It gave tremendous satisfaction. So, this dream came true today and the book is finally getting published for readers. I just cannot believe it!
In my professional journey, I came across Top Project Managers of renown companies who were my key team members/associates/colleagues/clients whose project management learnings have also been captured in the Epilogue of this book. That provides almost more than 600 man-years of experience which this book is bringing to you. Eureka!
I dedicate this book to six important and highly beloved persons in my life – who were highly instrumental in shaping my life, beliefs, value system which propelled me with a single- minded dedication to keep working with high motivation and deliver the best results on all plant engineering projects I executed
in my hectic and wonderful professional life. I relished each moment of it. It was God’s grace only which guided and helped me all through.
Dr R K Puri, Surgeon and Eye Specialist, my beloved and late father whose values and integrity I imbibed in my life and career. Without his blessings, I would not have reached anywhere in my life. My father served eye patients free and with little fee throughout his life, which gave me my purpose to serve society and I did my best to do that.
Smt Kamlesh Puri, my beloved, highly religious and respected mother who always prayed for my success and I would always remain indebted to her. Her prayers for me always worked which facilitated me to maintain work life balance with tremendous belief in God. Thank you, Mom. You are a wonderful person!
Meenakshi, my life partner, who was always with me in my good and bad times. She accompanied with me to difficult project sites and gave me right advice from time to time. Had she not encouraged me to do what I wanted to do, I would never have achieved what I achieved in my life and career.
Sanjay Nagi, my best friend and Mechanical Engineering batch mate of University of Roorkee, (IIT, Roorkee) where we together completed Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering in 1983. In pursuit of my career and to excel, I would tend to contact Sanjay to seek his advice and suggestions in difficult times where decision making was extremely difficult for me. His advice was extremely useful and helped strengthen my career
direction. Sanjay was kind enough to write down a Foreword in this book. Thanks Buddy!
My children – Akshita and Siddharth, my life favorites, were always an inspiration for me to keep working and be happy for them. I did everything in my life for them and my family.
FOREWORD
"Amongst his professional colleagues, I have probably the highest (more than 40 years) experience of knowing Sandeep. He is one of the few people born with the skill of a Project Manager and it is so appropriate that he shares best practices and methodologies in this book for experienced professionals.
Sandeep was absolutely focused on Projects and Project Management ever since 1983 when he graduated from IIT Roorkee. He has the tenacity to see a project through its various stages and in the face of evolving environmental adversity. There was a time in his illustrious career when he was handling multi country projects working with multi-cultural teams, battling supply chain challenges across continents, and ensuring corporate goals were met.
Sandeep has shared perspectives in this book based not on theory as any academic would do but stemming from his 40-year career in Project Management and leading from the front.
I believe these perspectives are worth their weight in gold for any aspiring Project Manager. The scheduling, CPMs, de bottlenecking etc. are all in the realm of theory and anyone can
read a textbook and get educated on these aspects – why this book is extremely relevant is that it is written by a thorough bred, ethical Project Management Professional of the caliber and depth of experience of Sandeep.
What is another unique aspect of this book is the ideas Sandeep brings from another few Top Project Managers whose cumulative business experience is over 600-manyears! – this is a path breaking innovative idea brought so wonderfully to fruition by Sandeep.
This is a rare book written by a practicing professional with practical inputs, ideas, and methodologies and highly recommended for any professional desiring to specialize in Project Management."

INTRODUCTION
I wish to sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart that you have taken a very critical step to buy this book on Excellence in Project Management
. This book is based on my personal and professional experience of last four decades in the field of Project and Engineering Management which taught me best practices of setting up and executing projects successfully, on time and within set budgets.
This book is titled – 10 Golden Commandments of a Top Project Manager
, and each Golden Commandment at the end of each part of the book highlights the take away of the chapter and it nicely captures best practices to be followed by a successful PM to seamlessly execute the project.
Many examples and references in this book are from plants or factories of Biotech, Pharmaceutical, Food & Beverage industry, hence those who are working in such plants would relate their experiences quickly and will benefit immensely.
It also teaches you how to set up documentation and systems for executing project and how to control and oversee all aspects of the project till it’s completion.
I am extremely confident that this book will enrich your professional career. There are also highly valuable suggestions of many of best project managers in the industry.
My brief professional biography is enumerated at the back side of this book.
Once again, I thank you very much and wish you success in your career and life!
PART I
PROJECT MANAGEMENT IN 21ST CENTURY
Starting my career as a Project Trainee in 1983 and then as a Project Engineer later in a remote project site in Junagadh, Gujarat, I started learning at construction sites directly since then and that journey continued for many years later. Learnings of Project Management and Design Engineering systems and procedures were learnt at site and few established Design and PMC firms commanded the construction industry in mid-eighties. However, with whatever resources we had, plants were constructed and commissioned on time and within budgets.
Over years, Project Management and Design Engineering Management were perfected by Design and PMC companies and highly robust documentation and SOPs became part of success stories of plants being constructed. The only constant is Change and this is true for Project Management. Many decades back, there were no proper project tools. Today project management is a very solid and structured field with many online and offline tools.
In the recent years, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification played a major part for the factories with a view to save operating cost of the plant and also build factories with alternate materials and new concepts.
21st Century’s Top Project Manager (PM) should have worked in all facets of project and design engineering management to become successful. PM should have worked in project controls, design engineering, procurement, construction management, safety, commissioning, qualification, and validation. Acquiring project management experience only in client / owner organization will not be sufficient, but Top PM should have also worked with leading Design Engineering / PMC organizations as that provides tremendous experience of how projects are effectively executed for multiple clients.
Futuristic trend in Project Management would bring in new technologies and different ways of executing projects.
CHAPTER 1
PROJECT MANAGEMENT IN 21ST CENTURY
This book is structured in such a way that if you could pick up all 10 Golden Commandments, you are destined to become highly successful Project Manager.
I like to mention following major trends of project management in 21st Century:
Impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
First and foremost, project Manager should embrace AI in project management and then learn how to leverage it for successful project completion. Once Project Manager has learned to leverage AI to automate data, project execution will be much easier than before. It also makes way for building meaningful relationships with your team members and clients.
AI has been adopted by many industries with great success, which coupled with Machine Learning (ML) has revolutionized the way industry has transformed itself. Many companies have also adopted AI and Automation in the field of project management. AI is being used in Project Management in conjunction with automation to perform daily tasks that earlier required human efforts. This helps provide project performance
status. For example – Project Managers can use automation to carry out complex tasks such as scheduling to data visualization and take right decisions based on captured insights.
Application of AI within project is completely reshaping project delivery. Application such as from Dassault Systems can provide 4-dimensional plant modeling where time (T) is the 4th element in the 3D Model. Presently applications such as PDS, PDMS, Smart Plant 3 D or AutoCad 3 D Plant provide plant modeling in three dimensions. However, it is now possible to create model with time element built in and that gives how plant elements are sequentially installed and when it will be fully installed in 4 D Model.
In near future, with these technologies, Project team members will call up Siri or Alexa on their mobiles and verbally log their daily progress reports and Project Manager in far-off location will ask AI engine to analyze all reports and provide real time progress status. PM knows how deadlines are pushed ahead either due to bad estimation or unknown external factors. With artificial intelligence, you can get the right estimation of a project’s duration, costs, and progress helping you predict realistic timelines for your project.
Most amazing aspect with be - Project Manager, after picking real time project progress data from AI engine, will quickly recommend most appropriate steps to the team in the field to improve project performance by executing right steps. AI engine will have legacy data of earlier completed projects and lessons learnt, hence AI engine will suggest those lessons learnt to project team members and Project Manager will approve only those lessons learnt which are applicable to the current project.
Hybrid Project Management Methodologies
Impact of Covid-19 on Project Managers and their teams has been tremendous, and it will continue for many years ahead which might change the way project teams of future will work. Project
teams are now widely dispersed and working remotely, therefore project managers will rely on new processes to help them adapt to a less traditional workflow. As they acclimatize to more flexible ways of working, they will need to be able to follow processes that are less rigid and more orientated.
When you implement the hybrid model, you get to bring all your projects, tasks, people, and communications at one place helping you make the right business choices.
Within many organizations core internal project teams are getting smaller while the reliance on remote project professionals is increasing. Thanks to digital technology, these workers do not need to be in the same physical location. In fact they can be based anywhere in the world, working in virtual teams. This brings many benefits, not least an end to the traveling, logistic and other administrative costs. To be successful, these virtual teams need good communication channels, such as Good Document Management Systems, Google Hangouts, and Good Project Management Software.
Project management software such as Document Management Systems, Project Portfolio Management
