    WHAT IS A MYTH OR LEGEND?

    For thousands of years, humans have shared stories with one another. To begin with, stories were told by oral storytellers and were passed down through the generations before they were written down. Some of the oldest stories we know are myths and legends.

    A myth is an old, traditional story that is not based on real events. Many myths started in ancient civilizations such as in Greece, China, or Egypt. They are often about gods and goddesses or brave human heroes with special powers. Myths from different cultures often explain how people believe the world began and how it works. A famous Greek myth is the story of King Midas, who wished that everything he touched would turn to gold.

    Like myths, many legends are set hundreds or thousands of years ago and have been passed on by storytellers over the years. Unlike myths, legends are originally based on people or events that really existed or took place. The story may have been changed over time to teach people something, make them obey their rulers, or give a special message.

    Midas wears a crown and gold clothing. He sits on a gold throne beside a table of gold food.

    King Midas also turned people into gold.

    While a legend may include real facts from human history, it can also involve mythical creatures such as dragons and giants. The legend of King Arthur is a famous example.
