Tales from the South - Chris Frazier

    Happy Halloween

T onya Stoneroad was waking up to the sound of the birds singing their morning tune, as she got up from her bed and looked out the bedroom window and viewed the country which was also her front yard. She lived in a trailer in the woods of Greenup, Kentucky all seventeen years of her life along with her alcoholic parents. She loved them and begged them to get help, but they would never hear of it, and beat her for even thinking of such a thought. So she would just leave it alone and suffer in silence and prey that one day they would see that they needed help and seek the help they need before it was too late.

She walked over to her closet, and got a pair of blue jeans a white shirt to wear to school. Tonya then walked to the bathroom and turned on the water, she looked at herself in the bathroom mirror: She was a big girl, but didn’t mind, she tied her, long, blond hair into a ponytail, and rubbed the sleep from her blue eyes, and climbed into the shower. When she was finished, she got out, dried off, and got dressed, and saw that her parents were not home. She knew that they were out getting drunk and high.

She fixed her own breakfast and lunch, and dinner (which she was used to doing) and made something for her parents, though she knew that they would never eat it. She finished her breakfast, and headed out the door for school. She didn’t mind the long walks to school (even though she felt all alone) she enjoyed this time of the year, it was October of 1994,the leaves were falling on the ground, the winds always felt nice and cool, and her favorite holiday was coming Halloween. She loved to watch to horror movies on television, and eat popcorn. This year she wanted to have a friend spend Halloween night with her, since her parents would be gone.

Tonya made it to school, and faced the day of being picked on, and dealed with it in silence and tears. The day went on like that for awhile. Tonya was sitting in the lunch room picking at her food, her best friend Jenny sat down in front of her. Jenny and Tonya had been friends for years. They were more than just friends; they were sisters to each other.

How you doing? Jenny asked. Tonya looked at her brown shoulder length hair and her brown eyes and slim, body and wanted to be her. I’m having a little Halloween party in a few days. You wanna come?"

Am I the only one coming? Jenny teased.

    Yes. Tonya said, depressed.

    It’s a girl’s only thing.

    Tonya said.

    Count me in.

    Okay.

The day continued on with the teasing until the final school bell rang.

Tonya and Jenny walked back home to Tonya’s place to spend the night. They knew that no one would mind. Jenny and Tonya were looking forward to the horror movie marathon and the food, and the sodas and whatever else that they would want to do. They started walking down the unpaved, dirt road, and began walking up the ever so long, unpaved driveway that led to Tonya’s double-wide trailer. They opened the door and no one was at home.

    Where is everyone? Jenny asked.

At a Halloween party getting drunk and stoned. Tonya replied. When will they be back?

    I don’t know. Tonya said.

Tonya turned on the television, and put a couple of frozen pizzas in the oven, then a grabbed a couple of sodas from the icebox and handed one to Jenny. Jenny took it, opened it and drank from it. Tonya drank from her can, and checked on the pizzas, and found that they were not done baking yet.

    Happy Halloween.

    Jenny greeted.

Happy Halloween. Tonya Greeted. Is the food ready?

Not yet, has the movie started yet? Tonya asked. No, not yet.

What time does it start? Jenny asked. At anytime now. Tonya answered.

About an hour later, the first movie began to start; Tonya and Jenny got into their night clothes, and ate both of the pizzas, while they watched the movies. They finished most of the sodas, and the popcorn, and moved on to the rest of the junk food in the place. The movie marathon had ended around midnight, and the girls had finished all the junk food. Jenny reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out a pack of cigarettes, and showed them to Tonya. Although neither one of them had ever smoked, they thought they would try it at least once. Tonya pointed to the sliding doors in the kitchen leading outside, Jenny nodded.

Tonya and Jenny both got up, and put on their jackets and made their way to the doors, Tonya pulled the heavy, glass, door open and they both walked outside and lit one up.

Not bad. Tonya said, coughing her heart out.

Smooth. Jenny replied, coughing badly. They quickly put out the cigarettes, and thought that they smelled something.

Do you smell that? Jenny asked.

Yeah, I think I do. Tonya said.

Are there any other houses around here? Jenny asked.

Not for at least a mile. Tonya answered. They looked up in the night sky and could see gray clouds of smoke.

They grabbed some flashlights and walked a few feet short of a mile, and could see a bright light and also heard a woman screaming, and people shouting. The girls continued to make their way through the woods, and froze at what they saw: a woman was tied to a stake, and was being set on fire, while a couple dressed as pilgrims, holding torches screaming, BURN THE WITCH,THE WITCH MUST BURN! Neither one could believe what they were seeing, but they both knew that they had to do something. Jenny broke off a branch from a tree, and charged after the couple, Tonya screamed, and the couple seen Jenny coming, and the woman removed a knife from her apron stabbing Jenny in the heart, Screaming DIE WITCH DIE! NOOOO! Tonya screamed, terrified. ANOTHER WITCH! The woman screamed, and the man looked over in the trees and saw Tonya, he picked something up and stuffed it into his pocket and began making his way towards Tonya. Tonya stricken with fear could not move, the man reached for the object and struck at Tonya, only to miss Tonya pushed him to the ground and began to run for her life, while still hearing the female voice scream BURN THE WITCH, WE WILL CAST OUT ALL EVIL! Tonya began running through the woods with the man dressed as a pilgrim chasing after her. She ran and ran, and could hear nothing from the man that was chasing her; she could no longer hear the woman’s voice, she stopped to catch her breath, and heard the sound of leaves being crushed, and she knew that he was still behind her, so she
