About this ebook

We Scare Ourselves is a fresh, new book of poetry with an occasional bit of prose thrown in for good measure. Ortegas poetry plays with decomposition by capitalizing and centering each line, indicating that every line standing alone is entitled to its own interpretation, its own meaning. Love, revolution, relationships, and music are the principal themes of this new, daring work. In this, the author of We Scare Ourselves exposes his own vulnerability by drafting a poem, then revising and recycling the poem until the better poem reveals itself right before your very eyes. We Scare Ourselves will draw you into a world of contradictions and surreal absurdities by echoing strong, crafted images and emotional truths about love and loss.

We Scare Ourselves - Gail Ortega

    What You See

    Thought about it.

    Was scared to

    Face it.

    Didn’t want to

    See a fool

When I looked in the mirror.

    Seems funny

    How a feeling you get

Can be turned to a trick,

    Just another game,

Another joy turned sorrow and pain.

Wanted to give myself an out,

    You know?

    Could always say

    I was wrong

When no wrong was done, except

The mistake I made by turning

    Away

    From the reflection I see

When I look in the mirror.

    Just between Me and You

    When dreams become

    Basic just for living

    And all things real are

    Because of imaginations of

    What they could be,

    All because there’s no one

    To reflect on,

    Talk to,

    And be talked about.

    Words,

    Which are crazy,

And in the language of a

    Lover’s mind—

    Just between me and
