About this ebook

The two sisters sat on the concrete floor in the long hallway outside their room at the Sea Shell Inn. They could hear the loud music from the pool party area below. They were in deep trouble. Holding the plastic bucket of ice, they looked at each other, searching for an answer. Dad would ground them again. He would be furious that they left their room after being told not too.
Now here they were, locked out. The book that was supposed to provide a clever way for them to re-enter the room had slipped out of place. There was absolutely nothing to do but sit there, sweating, and wait until their parents came back to the room to discover their sneaking out. "Just great! Now we are in for it", the older sister, Gloria, said. At that moment something moved at the end of the hallway close to the elevator. "What was that?" Ava asked in a whisper as green and blue feathers flew out of the elevator shaft.

Gigi Riggs

Gigi lives in Georgetown, Texas, where she retired after practicing many years as a dental hygienist. She now spends her time gardening, crocheting, playing the piano, and writing. Most of her stories are about animals and children because these two occupy the biggest space in her heart. She shares her time with four beautiful granddaughters who live close by and two rescued dogs. Both the girls and the dogs are totally “spoiled,” but that’s just the way it goes. Another of her favorite pastimes is watching old movies. Some of her interest in traveling through time was born in the movie Somewhere in Time and then grew even more inviting to her as she read the Scottish novel Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.

Return to the Fookie Shack - Gigi Riggs

    Chapter One

The Wrong Time but the Right Place

It was not the usual time of the year for a vacation, but our adventure was about to begin anyway.

No school on Friday or Monday next week, Gloria announced to her mom, Anna, tossing her backpack into the corner of her bedroom.

Yea! Lilly shouted as she struggled to find a spot where she could sit among the pile of stuffed animals on her bed.

What’s up with that? Anna asked. It’s the end of October. Have they decided to give days off for Halloween now?

Nope, it’s not really for trick or treating. It is just because they are painting a couple of the classrooms and installing a new wall that will make one big room into two smaller ones, Gloria explained with a know-it-all tone in her voice. And I think the potty that leaks is finally getting fixed, she added as she unwrapped a Starburst and popped it into her mouth.

We can go trick or treating and sleep late! Whoop, whoop, Ava said, raising her arms into the air in a victory cheer.

Just then, Shane walked down the hallway carrying the days’ contribution of trash toward the garage.

Hey, Anna spoke up. The girls are out of school for a long weekend next week. Want to go someplace? Can we afford to take off?

Shane stopped and answered, Like where? It’s October, it’s cool. There isn’t much to do outside right now.

Maybe we could go to Schlitterbahn, Great Wolf Lodge, or even Port Aransas. We’ve never gone to Port Aransas in the fall—it might be a great time to go. Not as many people, cheaper room rates, not as much seaweed to hike over to get to the water, and not as hot. We could stay three nights. Could be fun.

Okay, Shane said, returning from dumping the trash. He knew that he was now on call to check the Sea Shell Inn where they had always stayed in the summer. I’ll get online, and see if they have a room available for our family next weekend. Prices should be less now than in the summer. And we can never really afford it, but we will work it out somehow.

Whoopee, Wahoo! The three girls shouted in chorus.

    Chapter Two

    Meanwhile in Port A

Two beady black-eyed old seagulls scavenged in the sand for bits of silver fish and small orange crabs. It was their usual routine for every night’s sunset dinner.

Boring lazy ol’ summer, wasn’t it, buddy? Cappy asked as he jabbed the seaweed with his curved bill looking for a piece of orange crab.

Yep, shore’ was! Ank spoke up with the usual gravelly sound in his throat. Nobody slipped into the pool, no loud late night parties in the hot tub, no mysterious lights turning on and off. It was just quiet and routine day in and day out. So dull!

Nothin’ like the excitement two years ago, Cappy commented, when little Antonio’s spirit was searching for his mama, Anita.

Ya can say that again! Even I was tearing up when they were reunited at the Lighthouse in Corpus Christi, Ank admitted.

Ya know it, dude. I never saw Anita so happy! It was too cool for words. Ank went on, I felt puffed up for days!

Yep, I really dug our dropping clues for that Andrews clan to find. That was one T-errific idea I had, spoke Cappy proudly.

You had? questioned Ank. I think I helped with some of that bird-brained scheme ol’ buddy!

Okay, right on, you did. I liked that family too. They were good people. They helped us solve the mystery in room 338 at the Sea Shell Inn, they did, Cappy admitted. Ya know that family was here last summer too, but everything stayed quiet except for the kids playing Guitar Hero and Mario Kart with each other every night.

Yep, I remember that the middle girl, Lilly, fell into the motel pool one year when the family was walking out to the beach. That happened when she was pretty small. Her mom went in after her on the spot! So the crisis was averted, Ank continued as he tilted his head and spoke, "so what
