    The Redwoods of Gaia: A New Age Mirror of the Soul was intended to be a lecture to be given at some future date. Its thesis is that, when ancient human beings developed their neurologically complex brain functioning, the cosmic creator bestowed the gift of an intuitive, individuated sentience that would allow these first humans to understand the spiritual dimension of the creator itself. The author, Kathleen Chan, proposes that this occurred sometime around fifty-five thousand years ago at the advent of Homo sapiens, namely the Cro-Magnons, who emerged on the scene in Europe at that time.

    Ms. Chan, who holds graduate degrees in both anthropology and social work, has pulled together various ideas to propose this scenario, which she believes happened. She points to the sudden appearance of complex naturalistic drawings found in the caves at Lascaux, France, to assert that something miraculous had occurred.

    In her discussion of the human soul, she analyzes the contributions made by philosophy, religion, and science, as if they were stepping stones in formulating her theory of human spirituality. She draws upon the Theosophy and New Age concept of the inherent divinity of man, rather than the Christian view of man falling from grace after the Garden of Eden. Her book is fascinating, and her final comments regarding the earths planetary evolution are riveting.

    The author, Kathleen Chan, had always felt that her life’s purpose was to help others find their true selves and to begin their spiritual quest for the truth of their existence. Having worked as a licensed clinical social worker for twenty years, she has seen healing occur when her clients were able to connect with their deeper, inner core—that is, their souls. She began her own spiritual quest in 1986 when she joined the Aquarian Foundation. Now in her 70s, she felt it was time to share what she has learned through the many years of clinical work and as a student of metaphysics. She lives in a suburb of Phoenix, Arizona.

      PREFACE

      I chose the title The Redwoods of Gaia for its powerful visual imagery of giant redwoods reaching for the warm rays of the sun. With these botanical wonders, we recognize them as symbolic metaphors of ourselves seeking the nurturing rays of spiritual sunl ight.

      Within each of us resides an inner sacred core, eternally linked to our Creator. Many philosophers have called this core the soul, the higher self, or the anima. This is a concept of great importance. We find discussions of this throughout our history, in religion, philosophy, and even in science itself.

      Who are we? Why are we here? At what point in our biological evolution did we acquire a spiritual consciousness called the soul? And what is our eventual destiny? The Redwoods of Gaia seeks to answer these questions.

      INTRODUCTION

      A t the foot of Mount Tamalpais located in Marin County, California, stands one of the most pristine redwood groves in the world. The natives call this grove Muir Woods, named after John Muir, the renowned naturalist. In the midst of these giant redwoods, one senses the unity of nature. These ancient redwoods not only have immense root systems, but also their fronds absorb the moisture from the San Francisco fog each morning and evening. They stand a hundred to more than two hundred feet tall. Their longevity is astounding as some are as old as eight hundred years. As their fronds fall downward to the ground, they emit an aerosol that is antifungal and antibacterial, thus keeping their soil free of microbes that might undermine their growth. Their unforgettable invigorating scent permeates the air. The redwood tree is a beautiful metaphor of each o f us.

      A walk through Muir Woods is an uplifting experience. For others of us, peace may be found within meditation, going inward until the noise of the ego’s chatter is stilled. Within that stillness, we find a sense of balance, harmony, and sublime peace. For those of us unable to meditate in this manner, communal prayer may afford us that same experience. Wherever you find your sacred space to do your inner work, it is important you do so regularly. And why, you may ask. Because when we connect with our innermost being, we experience our true inner sacred core. In our walk through Muir Woods, to the sound of ocean waves, or to the beating of our own hearts, we truly enter into a conversation with this aspect of being human. When one reads out loud Robert Frost’s famous poem Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, it touches us in a way that our everyday life does not. What within us resonates with his beautiful poem? I submit to you that it is our spiritual consciousness, which some call the soul, that is touched.
