About The Author
PROLOGUE
It happened again.
What happened?
Another missing person
said the NYPD desk sergeant. So, what. It always happens. Most show up later or we find a body.
This is the fifth in the past three months.
Look back, you will see that we average 24 to 30 a year.
How many located?
About half turn up within a week, a third end up death, and the rest are just gone.
That don’t bother you.
No, we have real police work to do. Don’t waste any time on it, something always shows up.
Will it?
The sheep are all astray in this small rural mountain area in the Alpine. A worried wife said, he has never been gone this long. He is always home at sunset for his dinner and a beer. Something is wrong.
I would not worry
said the neighbor farmer, he will show up.
Will he?
More strange lights reported over Paris last night.
There are always strange lights over Paris.
A whole group of tourists seem to have gone missing.
Probably off drunk somewhere and the guide lost track. You know how these Americans are. They will show up.
Will they?
In the Australian outback, a mother sits down to dinner with her children. Dad is going again into the Blue Mountains.
Another walk-about
said the elder son. Don’t feel the same. He always takes Patty,
the family dog, this time she returned without him, worse, she won’t come out of the barn. Hardly eats. Instead of rushing to her food, I bring it to the barn. It lays barely touched.
He will be back soon.
Will he?
Blazed upon the large building in Sweden are the letters S.E.T.I. Within the conversation is about abductions. Do you realize that is now over 5000 missing persons world-wide?
So, what. Most are simply fed-up people dropping out, or a crime, not an abduction by aliens. In fact, I don’t believe in the abduction theory. How long have we been searching for intelligent life out there, and nothing. Let the normal authorities worry about such things. Keep looking for a tangible radio transmission or signs. There is nothing else out there.
Are you sure?
Deep within the Vatican’s non-public library, an aging monk is praying, contemplating, "Lord, thy will be done, I do not question, but over the centuries, where have all these people gone? There must be a purpose, Your purpose, but so many without any explanation, evidence, or reason. Thy will be done, and it is not for us to question. But so many. Why? There mut be a Divine reason. You must have a reason beyond our comprehension. It is for us to accept, for us to do as required. Thy will be done. Amen.
But why?"
In a New Orleans French Quarter Bar, a small group of young business executives, all former college classmates, gathered for the every third Friday of the month meeting.
"Where’s Ben? One asked to the group of five in general.
Should be here.
With the brass band playing and the banging piano in the background answered another while sipping a Sazerac.
Spoke to him about an hour ago, said he was leaving the office.
Said another.
Not here
, Must know it’s his time to buy.
They continued while drinking and most loosening their neckties.
Probably off chasing some girl.
You think?
CHAPTER ONE
CONTACT
The Sun has long retired for the night and the Moon shone brightly above. The car smoothly parked beneath the make-shift carport under the raised house. Most of the homes in this area had been elevated due to the flooding of the recent Hurricane. The 100-year Hurricane which seems to arrive every other year or so.
Parking, he stepped out of the car and walked to the passenger door. Routinely removing the canvas business-bag, placing the strap upon his shoulder, and picking up the sandwich bag consisting of a just purchased late-night dinner.
Out of the shadows a voice was heard – You are required.
Startled, he looked about and saw a tall figure about seven feet emerge again repeating – You are required.
Upon thinking it may be a homeless person, further glance in the dim lightening revealed a somewhat bland individual with no distinguishable features other than the absence of any. Dress was somewhat muted monotone gray shirt and slacks. You are required.
It repeated stepping out of the shadow.
Instinctively, the driver placed his hand inside the bag gripping the small revolver within somewhat loosely. The gun was always available this being a less than secure town with many car jackings.
Who are you, what in the hell are you doing here, what did you say?
He exclaimed rapidly and somewhat nervously now gripping the gun more firmly.
The figure approached closer. You are required.
He now proceeded to remove the gun from the bag when all went dark.
Upon regaining consciousness, he found himself inside a vehicle of sorts. He was seated upon a bench extending from the side of the vehicle. Across from him on the opposite side was another bench also coming out from the side of the vehicle. There was no other seating and the entire enclosure was a drab off-white coloring.
The tall man, if indeed it was a man, was seated across from him.
The vehicle was a large pod shaped multi-facet craft able to travel on land, sea, and air. It had no windows and was ever changing its exterior hue to reflect the background of the surroundings. There appeared to be no controls and no one operating it for the tall man sat, as he, and did not move. There was an ever-so-slight feeling of motion and he knew that they must be in the air. Soon, there was a feel of an abrupt dip, and the sound of water around them.
Where am I?
he asked somewhat frightened and puzzled. Were we flying and are we now in the water?
He direct at the stoic man before him. I can’t see anything, can’t see outside, where are you taking me?
He yelled to the silent man who continue with a blank stare at nothing. Attempting to rise, he finds that he is restrained by invisible bounds to the bench, to the ship itself.
As if turned on, the tall man says, you are required.
Now, for the first time since their encounter, he gets a good look at his kidnapper. He has a large head containing strands of hair seemly placed there as an afterthought. There are large almost oval shaped eyes, diminutive ears, and small practically undeterminable nose and mouth. His overall coloring is rather pasty not skin-like, but like worn leather. His movements are not fluid but mechanical leading to the conclusion that this was an artificial being.
After a considerable length of time, unbeknownst to him, the ship had traversed overland, immersed in the Gulf proceeded to the Atlantic Ocean, and arriving at a deserted area resurfaced into the air. Bordering the Indian Ocean, it approached and submerged into the Antarctic Ocean continuing to the ice continent of Antarctica. It dived deep into the ocean beneath the continent going where no one had gone before or so it would seem. Eventually the ship pierced some sort of barrier as evidenced by the slight resistance of the impact. It came to rest in an area beneath the water but not in the water. All was still, all was silent.
Throughout this time with extreme stress at his situation and fear for its outcome, the most overwhelming feeling was hunger as it has evidently been several hours since eating. His thoughts, inexplicably, was on the bag containing the sandwich picked up some time ago and not fear for his life.
The strange being sitting across from him rose and walked to the blank wall. Almost immediately an aperture appeared enabling it to walk through and out of the craft. After some moments of sitting alone, he, feeling release from the bounds to the wall, rose and stood up. Thinking that perhaps the restraint was not one of imprisonment but of safety akin to seat belts on a plane or car. After standing and stretching to get circulation back, he too approached the opening.
At the exterior, apparently waiting for
