About this ebook

This manual is aimed at providing basic skills to poultry farming starters and existing small-scale and medium-scale broiler farmers to help them get the best out of their chicken meat producing ventures. The manual has been put together using lessons learnt during the author’s journey, having launched similar enterprises in the past including the author’s experience gained through launching greenfield large chicken meat producing farms in Nigeria, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
This handbook has been put together taking into account the needs of the small- and medium-scale producers farming 25 broilers to 10,000 broilers in the African context.
The important message is to “start small, learn the business and then scale-up”. There is money in chicken meat production provided you do it properly. Enjoy your poultry farming using this book as a guide to feed the African nation.

About the Author
Hope has pursued a career in the poultry industry for more than 19 years. He joined Crest Breeders International (Pty) Ltd in 2000 as a Poultry Veterinarian and rose through the ranks to become the Managing Director of Crest Poultry Group’s division Hubbard Zimbabwe (Pty) Ltd.
In 2012, Hope was invited to join Free Range Farms (FRF) Nigeria Limited (a subsidiary of Food Concepts Plc Nigeria Limited) as General Manager responsible for all poultry operations. He successfully established the business from scratch to become Food Concepts Group’s most profitable business unit within one year of inception.

Hope left FRF in 2014 after being invited by Bupo Animal Health (Pty) Limited (BAH), based in Pretoria, South Africa (SA) to head the Animal Health Pharmaceutical division as General Manager, with the main focus of growing the company’s African markets including SA. He held this role until August 2018, when he was promoted to Managing Director of BAH, a position he still holds. His responsibilities involve interacting with small/medium/large scale farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa, as they make up the bulk of BAH’s customers. Upon identifying some of their problems in poultry production, he decided to produce this manual specifically targeted at these farmers to help them succeed in their poultry farming ventures.

The inspiration for writing this manual to assist my fellow broiler farmers came from my interaction with them at various forums, including on social media.

All manuals I have come across have been written by poultry specialists. More than 80% of the time, these specialists interact with large broiler producers but are not practicing farmers themselves. As a small producer, I have realised beginners face challenges that are totally different from large producers.

As you read through and learn from this manual, remember it was prepared by someone who is a poultry farmer himself and not by a non-farming poultry production specialist/veterinarian. The manual was prepared from my own experiences as a poultry farmer. I am confident you will derive maximum value from this manual.

Special thanks goes to my wife, who has been instrumental in encouraging me to go the extra mile to assist my fellow poultry farmers.

Wishing you the best – and enjoy your broiler farming!
