To her father's chagrin, Nora has recently retired from competitive swimming. She is now concerned about her future. Mrs. Elm reminds Nora that she can go wherever she wants and be whoever she wants. Mrs. Elm, in particular, encourages Nora to leave Bedford and pursue a career in glaciology. Mrs. Elm informs Nora that her father has died of a heart attack a short time later. Mrs. Elm consoles a bereaved Nora.

The story is set 19 years in the future. Nora is still in Bedford, living a drab existence. Nora's cat, Voltaire, dies in two days, her estranged brother visits town but ignores her, she is fired from her job at the music store String Theory, and her only music student, Leo, cancels his lessons.
