About this ebook

Persuasive communication is a popular topic these days, but for many readers, “persuasion” carries connotations of manipulation. In Persuasive Communication, an audio course from Scribd Coach, persuasive communication professional and coach Paul Mischel offers a different understanding: Manipulation, the act of “making” someone do something, is unethical and ineffective. Instead, Mischel argues, collaboration, trust, and empathy are the underpinnings of persuasive communication.

In the course, Mischel explores the core concepts of trust and empathy, explains how to create a climate of agreement, and how to navigate differences of opinion elegantly. He teaches listeners how to use their voice intentionally, how communicators use “frame control” to set context and manage their interactions, and how you can use different frames to improve your persuasive communication. He also shares exercises along the way to help you apply what you’ve learned immediately.

Ethical persuasiveness is more plausible than you may have been led to believe. Persuasive Communication can show you the way.

    Introduction

Welcome to Persuasive Communication a course from Scribd Coach. I’m Paul Mischel.

In over 23 years working in private practice as a clinical hypnotherapist, I get one question that comes up more than any other. It’s usually framed something like this: How do I make my peer, boss, customer, partner or child do what I want them to do?

Of course, it’s a tempting idea that we can snap our fingers and get people on our side. We see it in movies and TV shows, and it seems like it could solve a lot of problems (or at least save time!). But the truth is, despite my extensive background and training in Hypnosis and Neuro Linguistic Programming (or NLP), the fact is, I can’t make people think or do anything against their will. And even if I were morally aligned with coercing people, and could use very cleverly crafted hypnotic language to manipulate them, the question remains: Would engaging with people in that way lead to healthy, long term and mutually beneficial and respectful relationships? I highly doubt it.

Take a moment to ask yourself, Would I want someone manipulating me to do something I didn’t want to do? Would I trust that person to have my best interests at heart? I’m going to assume you had an instinctive gut reaction that went something like: Absolutely not!

So what is persuasive communication if it’s not about making someone do something? In this course, you’ll learn how persuasive communication is about managing the
