      In Roblox, you can log in and join your friends in any of thousands of different worlds. Some worlds are just for fooling around, some are about trying to reach a goal, and others are all about building cities or entire planets.

      THE BASICS

      ROBLOX 101

      Do you play with Legos and build elaborate structures, vehicles, or other crazy-cool creations? If those types of creations are fun to you, then you already understand the foundation of Roblox. Imagine something just like that but in digital form. Roblox is infinitely customizable. What’s more, you can play Roblox with people from all around the world. Roblox itself is not a game. It’s what you use to make a game, or experience. It is the central hub where everyone comes together to imagine and create.

      Roblox first launched in 2006. Since then, the game has grown to over 170 million active monthly players who have logged over 8.43 billion hours of gameplay, with over 37.1 million daily users active in 2021.

      In this chapter, you’ll learn why people play Roblox, how it is sort of like Minecraft, how to get started by creating your own Roblox account and user profile, and what you’ll find on the Roblox website after you log in. You’ll also learn about the many ways you can play Roblox, no matter the gaming device you use.

      WHY DO PEOPLE PLAY ROBLOX?

      Roblox is a game about doing and being whatever you want. Anyone can play the latest Star Wars game if they want to feel like they’re a Jedi, and anyone can play the latest Madden if they want to become an NFL star. But what if you want to build your own restaurant and serve other people while wearing a Spider-Man costume? You can’t do that type of stuff in store-bought games.

      In Roblox there is no limit. I am going to do my best to give you all the knowledge and tools to start creating and playing your own dreams. Then I’ll point you in the right directions to learn and grow even more.

      Another awesome thing about Roblox is just how much cool stuff there is to do. If you wanted, you could play and create stuff entirely for free without paying anything at all. You can build games using bricks that look like Legos. You can create huge worlds full of flowing water and massive mountains. People spend hours changing up their worlds and making games that they share only with friends.

      IS ROBLOX LIKE MINECRAFT?

      Based on that previous description, Roblox probably sounds a lot like another popular world-building game you’ve likely heard of or played before: Minecraft.

      Roblox itself is not a game. It is a building platform to create games. Adopt Me!, Jailbreak, and Piggy are all made with Roblox Studio. Minecraft is made with Java, another programming language. But it is still acceptable to say, Do you play Roblox? Here are some examples of the differences:

      HOW TO CREATE A ROBLOX ACCOUNT

      Now let’s create an account! When you visit the Roblox website (Roblox.com), you should see the homepage, which looks like this:

      The account creation process is simple. If you are under thirteen, you need to have a parent or guardian with you. You’ll need to enter the following information into the form to set up an account.

      BIRTHDAY

      Be honest and input your actual birthday. If you’re under the age of thirteen, be sure to ask your parents if you can sign up. (They will want to read the Q&A for Parents at the end of this book for more information.)

      USERNAME

      This is how people in the game will identify you. This username will float over your head while you’re playing, appear on your profile, be used when listing your character for high scores, and everything else. Think of something that you feel comfortable with other people seeing, but don’t use your real name or anything else that could identify who you are in real life. The site will tell you if someone else already has the username you want, and if it’s taken, you’ll have to choose a different one. Talk to your parents before you make a final decision. Roblox does allow you to give yourself a nickname later. A nickname will appear instead of your login name. But it’s your choice.

      PASSWORD

      Your password needs to be at least eight characters long, and it should include both letters and numbers. Don’t use your real name or username because that’s too easy for someone to guess. Try to mix up letters and numbers and include capital letters or punctuation. Write it down or store it somewhere safe in case you forget it. Talk to your parents about what password might work well.

      DO NOT SHARE YOUR PASSWORD! EVER! Never ever for any reason! Just NO.

      GENDER

      Pick either the male icon, the female icon, or neither. It is not required. This will affect what gender your avatar identifies as and will help you feel more connected to your character. It is perfectly acceptable to play any gender or non-gender you feel comfortable with.

      FINAL STEPS

      The final steps to creating your account are to first click the Sign Up button. By clicking this, you agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy (which you should read over and ask a parent to look at before you agree).

      You may also need to verify you are human. This is a simple process. Just follow the instructions on the screen so Roblox knows you are not a robot.

      ADDING AN EMAIL ADDRESS

      One thing you might have noticed is that you didn’t need to input your email address when creating an account. If you’re over the age of thirteen, an email address isn’t required to get started, but if you don’t provide an email address later, you’ll be limited in what you can do. For example, you won’t be able to use the forums, get Robux, or spend Robux. (Robux is a form of virtual currency used in Roblox, and you use it to purchase things like upgrades and special items in games.)

      Click the small Gear icon in the top-right corner of the website once you’ve logged in, and select Settings from the drop-down menu. On this page you can input an email address. After doing so the game will email you a link to click to fully complete your account setup process.

      CREATING THE REST OF YOUR PROFILE

      Back on the Settings section of your profile, under the Account Info tab, you will also see two other fields labeled Personal and Social Networks. In the Personal section you can write a bit about yourself (but do not include information about where you live or your real name) and which country you live in.

      In the Social Networks section (which appears under the Account Info section), if it’s okay with your parents, you can add links to your Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Twitch accounts. There is also an option to adjust the settings so these links are visible to no one, to friends, to users you follow, to your followers, or to everyone. Choose the option that is most comfortable for you and your parents.

      ADDITIONAL SECURITY SETTINGS

      When you made your account, all you did was provide a single password, but you might want to add a few other layers of security just for extra peace of mind. If you click the Security tab on your My Settings page, you’ll find a list of other measures to take.

      At the top of the screen is an option for 2 Step Verification. This means that if anyone tries to log in to your account from a device that has never logged in to your account before, then you’ll get an email with an access code inside. Unless that code is entered at the menu upon logging in, the new device won’t be able to access your account.
