    Overview

Outwitting the Devil: The Secret to Freedom and Success (2011) by Napoleon Hill describes the circumstances surrounding the self-help author’s rise to fame and fortune. After overcoming many personal and professional trials, including financial ruin, Hill had the opportunity to question the Devil about the ways in which he ensnares humanity. Too controversial to be released in its own time, the book sat untouched for more than 70 years before it was finally published.

Hill’s career in self-help began in 1908, when, as a young man, he interviewed Andrew Carnegie. At Carnegie’s suggestion, Hill decided to spend 20 years analyzing the successes and failures of more than 25,000 people to develop a philosophy of achievement. Carnegie also told Hill that, with any luck, at the end of this 20-year study, Hill would discover his other self, an inner guide
