About the Author
FOR THE READER
There has to be more to life!
If you’ve uttered those words in a desperate wish to gain a wider view of the world—one that allows you to see past the narrow lens of perfectionism—this book is for you. I believe you can shift your view from a life that focused on being perfect and in control (and consequently filled with constant anger and criticism) to one that recognizes the limitation of perfectionism and see another, better way to live.
If you are tired of the way life always seems to turn out—sick of the same types of relationships, the same reactions to others, and the seeming inability to stay on focus and follow your dreams—you have picked up the right book. Better than Perfect explores practices in which the perfectionists’ beliefs have set up addictive patterns that, with our thoughts, Inner Critic, feelings, and body reactions, create those limiting ways in which we are in the world. This book focuses on processes where we can move forward and past all of it.
The setup in chapters throughout Better than Perfect moves through major facets of the perfectionists’ beliefs and behaviors to show you the power of the perfectionist mindset and how limiting and controlling it can be. It shows you the way we see others with respect to this lens and the mask that we strive to maintain and discloses just how these affect our relationships with others, our lives, and even ourselves.
Sometimes it seems impossible to see life in any other way, but there is another way. In this book, I will not only reveal these forms of addictions but will also show you how to break them down and change them so they no longer have power and no longer take us off the path. There is a path that we want to be on which is difficult to see and hear let alone follow if our perfectionist ways are so loud and powerful.
The various techniques described in this book offer a way to finally free yourself from the addictive power of perfectionism. I’ve even included homework¹ to help you practice the techniques that reduce these addictive patterns. As you apply what you learn, you will break the habits that limit your life. You’ll discover how to hear your inner intuition that is a lot quieter in nature than your perfectionist beliefs and perceptions. When you can hear it, you can start to follow it and live more in a place of flow being in the life you have dreamt of, a life involving your heart and higher purpose instead of in a life of control, anger, and trying to be perfect. You can finally live a life of growth and learn to reach your full potential rather than stay scared of failure and critical of the things that don’t really matter. Finally, you can be fully in the world instead of being overwhelmed and anxious by it.
It’s time to free your mind, find your purpose, and follow your passion.
Start reading and take the first step toward becoming the person you were meant to be.
TO GAIN THE MOST FROM THIS BOOK
You will find a Homework section at the end of each chapter. I suggest that you complete the homework before moving on to the next chapter to best assimilate what you’ve learned.
I have also created two guided visualizations, one on groundedness and one to help you refocus and dream, in addition to the companion workbook which you can use in conjunction with the homework. To access these free downloadable resources, please use the following link:

FEEL THE PAIN AND DO IT ANYWAY
Don’t let the fear of failure stop you; the world needs your greatness.
—Emmanuel Apetsi
Whatever it is I need to do, I feel like I have to do it perfectly. It’s hard to deal with the constant need to be correct and desire to do the perfect thing all the time. It’s my desire to be the perfect person in every situation—knowledgeable of everything all the time, complete, smiling, open, caring, not angry, not emotional, a great listener, and whatever else it takes to just be perfect all of the time. My Inner Critic maintains constant vigilance and requires me to control my emotions and always keep them in check.
As I work for perfection, nothing pains me more than to see others who don’t know that perfection is and should always be the goal. I mean, aren’t they aware that everyone should strive to be the best, be more, and be perfect? Do they not know that life is about being correct, following the rules, and making sure that those things are all done or addressed before considering anything non-essential (i.e., any sort of enjoyment). Until everything essential is completed, all pleasure should be denied. Life consists of monitoring ourselves, avoiding making mistakes that others can see, controlling ourselves, and keeping it all together.
These are some of the unconscious mottos of the perfectionist. Although we each have our unique way as individuals to see and be in this world, a core driver for perfectionism is to seek perfection. When describing the personality of the perfectionist in her book The Enneagram, Helen Palmer writes:
Perfectionists are usually not aware that they deny themselves pleasure. They are so preoccupied with what they
should do and
what must
