About this ebook

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Book Preview:

#1 Naples is the capital of southern Italy, and it is a beautiful and chaotic city. It is a great place to visit if you like Italy as far south as Rome.

#2 Naples is an ideal day trip from Rome or Sorrento. Those who are not comfortable with chaotic cities should not spend the night in Naples.

#3 For three centuries, Naples was one of the world’s richest and most sophisticated cities. But when it was conquered by the Romans, the city never fully adopted the Latin language and Roman ways. It remained feudal and agricultural, with the church owning much of the land.

#4 The lack of a postwar economic recovery actually is a boon to tourists. It preserved an independent way of life that dates back centuries. Visitors today enjoy a rare sight: a city that has been continuously inhabited and self-sustaining for 2,500 years.

    #2

Naples is an ideal day trip from Rome or Sorrento. Those who are not comfortable with chaotic cities should not spend the night in Naples.

    #3

For three centuries, Naples was one of the world’s richest and most sophisticated cities. But when it was conquered by the Romans, the city never fully adopted the Latin language and Roman ways. It remained feudal and agricultural, with the church owning much of the land.

    #4

The lack of a postwar economic recovery actually is a boon to tourists. It preserved an independent way of life that dates back centuries. Visitors today enjoy a rare sight: a city that has been continuously inhabited and self-sustaining for 2,500 years.

    #5

Naples has a large number of small tourist information centers, known as TIs. They are generally helpful, but be prepared to wait. The handiest one is in Centrale train station.

    #6

Naples has two train stations, Centrale and Garibaldi, and they are essentially the same place. The main station is Centrale, and it has a small TI, an ATM, a bookstore, and baggage check.

    #7

The Campania ArteCard regional pass may save you a few euros if you're here for two or three days, use public transportation, and visit multiple major sights. It includes free entry to two sights and transportation within Naples, on the Circumvesuviana train, and on Amalfi Coast buses.

    #8

Naples has great ferry connections to Sorrento, Capri, and other nearby destinations. Cruise ships use the giant Stazione Marittima cruise terminal, and slower car ferries leave from Calata Porta di Massa, east of the terminal.

    #9

Naples International Airport is close to town, and Alibus shuttle buses zip you there in 20 minutes from the airport. The shuttle bus leaves and departs from the bus platforms at the northwest corner of Piazza Garibaldi, the far-right corner when exiting the train station.

    #10

Theft is a risk in Naples, so be careful. Avoid walking alone in unsaftey areas, and keep your bags safe by leaving them at your hotel or at
