    #5

I was a very lucky child. As much as there was confusing stuff going on at home and dynamics that were difficult to understand, outside there was another whole world of fantasy and the countryside, which I lived in with my friends.

    #6

I had a James bike, which was a proper grown-up bike, and I turned it into a track bike by removing the mudguards and changing the tires. I loved fishing, and I learned to do it near the river Wey.

    #7

I had a lot of fun as a kid in Ripley, but I was also constantly breaking the law. I would go scrumping – stealing apples – on the Dunsborough estate, and we would sometimes see Florence Desmond’s famous friends walking on the Green.

Music was a big part of my life growing up, because in the days before TV, it was a very important part of our community experience. On Saturday nights, most of the adults would gather at the British Legion Club to drink and smoke and listen to local entertainers.

I was more used to hearing the piano, because Rose loved to play. She would also sing, and I would often hear her sing songs that I had never heard before. I had inherited some musical genes from her family.

    #10

I was always listening to music, from the radio, which was permanently switched on in the house. I loved any music that was a powerful expression of emotion. I would listen to Children’s Favourites, introduced by the incredible Uncle Mac, on Saturday mornings.

    #11

I had always thought that my mother would sweep me up in her arms and take
