To Mum, thank you for always encouraging me to believe. What started with searching for fairies at the bottom of the garden turned into real potion making and writing this book. This is for you.

    introduction

The beauty industry is often portrayed as being full of glitter and perfection, but the ugly side of the beauty industry is that it produces an astronomical amount of unnecessary waste.

About 120 billion units of packaging is mass produced by the beauty industry every year; much of it plastic. This translates to billions and billions of plastic bottles, tubs, pots, sprays and tubes making their way into our homes. In addition to the huge amount of plastic used to create packaging for beauty containers, approximately 18 million acres of woodland is deforested every year to produce the virgin paper and card used to display these products. Plastic containers are made of mixed materials and often have complex designs, which means they are very rarely able to be recycled. The plastic created by the beauty industry is destined to be used once before being disposed of and, very often, it finds its way into our beautiful oceans.

Single-use plastic waste is currently entering our oceans at a rate of around 11 million metric tons a year. It is harming marine life, damaging habitats and disrupting ecosystems. If we keep consuming at this rate, the amount of plastic in our oceans is set to triple by 2040. This will have a devastating effect on our marine ecosystems and wildlife.

The beauty industry makes huge amounts of money by persuading us to buy more and more products - most of them unnecessary. It is an industry that wants us to buy the latest products, the newest shades, the freshest scents. The message is just to buy and keep on buying. Nothing about the beauty industry system is sustainable. I don’t believe we can continue in this way.

Okay! Enough of the scary stuff. What can we do about it? Because we have to do something, right?

I believe the best thing we can all do as individuals, is to slow down our rate of consumption and reduce the number of products we buy from these giant companies that are harming our planet. If enough of us stop buying products packaged in single-use plastic, the rate of production and consumption will slow, as will the impact on our planet.

But Em, I don’t want to turn into a smelly, dry skinned, lank haired hippy!, I hear you cry!

Fear not, there is another way to keep looking naturally beautiful, without having to buy into this planet-harming, mass consumerism. Learning how to make your own beauty products at home, personalised for you is how!

Experimenting with different recipes is all part of the fun
