I am throwing myself into work with everything I have and keep hoping that will be enough.

Work, at least, I know how to do, and fortunately, with the summit only two months past, Miyara has gifted me with plenty of it.

I flip a twig from the magecraft supply stash on my desk, twirling it between my fingers around and around, trying to focus on figuring out whatever my eldest sister is actually angling for here in my office. This might be easier if I had more tea, but the real problem is Iryasa has grown less predictable.

Nothing’s the same as it was before Miyara decided all of us should have supportive family relationships. She went and ruined our perfectly functional if deeply unhealthy working dynamics, and now none of us know how to talk to each other.

Relearn sister management is now an item on my mental to-do list.

    Thanks, Miyara.

The twig spins out of my hand. Shit. Amateur error: I have to always be prepared to handle spell materials without looking at them lest that slow down my spellcasting when it counts.

A princess isn’t afforded the luxury of making mistakes.

Whatever, I have more twigs. I pick up another and start over.

I’ll keep spinning until everything is spent if that’s what it takes to be sure my public façade is as it should be.

I approve of our newfound sisterhood in principle, but now Iryasa wants to be involved in everything as she figures out where she should be involving herself. Sa Rangim’s doing it too, but Iryasa is nearly as bad as Miyara for excessive connivance until she’s ready for a grand gesture.

Then I realize Sa Rangim is manufacturing a reason to get Iryasa out of the room, and I drop my stick again. Spirits take it.

We’re not done, I tell them, pushing down on my desk to lever myself out of my chair in a smooth movement that is forceful and graceful and not at all wobbly. Perfect. You’re not going to make anyone believe you’re serious about governing if you just up and leave midway through discussions.

Iryasa raises her eyebrows. I’m not going to make anyone believe I’m serious if I let them just ignore me and do what they were already planning, either.

In my defense, Iryasa’s opinions on the politics of dealing with Nakrab now that we’re demanding reparations and sending an invading princess delegation—okay, not really, but they’re taking it that way—I actually do think are worth attending to. Especially since I doubt I’ll disagree with any of her suggestions seriously, which is, practically speaking, the best case for people who outrank me inserting themselves into my business.

    So I’m
