CHAPTER 1
Introduction
Football is by far the most popular sport in the world (referred to throughout this book as ‘football’, ‘soccer’, and the ‘game’).
Nearly 50% of the world population (an estimated 3.5 billion people) support football teams worldwide, and nearly 250 million people play the game.
There are hundreds of thousands of teams; from the amateur league clubs all the way up to the professional elite clubs (i.e. English Premier League clubs).
No other sport comes close to the popularity of the beautiful game.
It is therefore not surprising that many children wish to become professional football players.
The traditional routes to become a professional player include being found by a scout working for a club, securing a trial with a club and impressing the club enough to be offered a contract, appointing an agent to find a club for a player, and joining an academy to complete a training programme with a club.
This book includes a directory of academies located around the world with useful information about each academy.
Our hope is that this information shall help players and / or those working with young players select an academy that can improve a player’s prospects of fulfilling the dream of becoming a professional player.
Choosing The Academy
A ‘football academy’ is …an establishment for the coaching and education of Academy Players.
[1]
The academy systems adopted by clubs and independent organisations may have many similarities but the training of players and the facilities available shall differ from one academy to the next.
Nonetheless, the academy system is a good way for players to develop their skills as a footballer. Joining an academy can also possibly lead to the player securing a scholarship and / or a professional contract.
The football academy directory found in this book therefore mainly includes club academies as these provide a player with the best opportunity of playing professional football for a living upon completing a training programme.
