About this ebook

Foxes and wolves and…bears? Oh, my!

Dahlia – If I thought I had terrible taste in men before, I certainly believe it now after this latest discovery. It's probably best that the goddess chose for me this time. Her taste in men is impeccable. Xander is incredible, everything I've always wanted, but to get to our happily ever after, we need to face down a fox shifter with dark magic, a vindictive and abusive wolf, and…the woman that rejected my mate years ago? Could we catch a break?

Xander – After a shifty fox tried to unalive my mate – twice – and her abusive wolf ex-fiancé claimed her without permission, I am sure our happily-ever-after will never happen. But after a vision from the goddess shows me just how good our life together will be, I just have to be patient. I've never been a patient man. But the vision was beautiful and everything I've always wanted, so I can learn patience to ensure this happens. Just one question…why are my children bears?

Will Dahlia and Xander get their perfect ending? Will justice be served to those that abused her? And why are their children bears? Find out in the series conclusion.

Margeaux Nix

Margeaux Nix is a pen name for my paranormal books. I also write contemporary/erotic romance under the pen name J. Silence.  I never thought I'd like 'shifter' books and then I read one and quickly devoured the entire 10 book series. I was hooked! It didn't take long for me to fall in love with fated mates, alpha heroes and the women that love them.  When I started writing shifters, my intention was 'just one' while another series marinated. A dozen books later, and I can't seem to stop myself! I am a Navy son mom, a teenage girl mom, and a doggo mom to my two rescued writing companions - a lab mix and a border collie mix. I'm also a soon-to-be GG (gorgeous grandma)!

Protect - Part Three - Margeaux Nix

    Chapter 1

    Dahlia

Iam filled with shame that it happened. Shame that he did that to me and I didn’t, couldn’t fight him off. Shame that I didn’t report it, didn’t do anything but hide it. I wonder how many other times he’s done something like that. How many times has he destroyed a woman’s dignity, her trust, and her life ? Am I the only one, or are there many of us?

Xander’s siblings are all fit to be tied – so angry that if I sensed anything other than fierce protectiveness for me and unbridled hatred for him emanating from the group of powerful beings I would be tempted to run away. To get out of town, leave my mate behind, and start somewhere new. Again.

His sisters rush to me with Violet and Kat sending me delicious waves of peace, while Everly begins issuing orders to people I can’t see but am sure exist. If I’ve learned anything over the last year, just because you don’t see or believe in something doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. I’m not sure how she is communicating with them, but I’m sure it is some kind of spell for the powerful witches.

Xander and his brothers are huddled in a corner on the opposite side of the room having a very intense conversation. Whatever is being said, Xander does not look happy. I can feel that he is angry, but beneath that is pain – intense and real – and fear. I don’t know what a brute of a man such as my mate could fear, but I sense it clear as the sun outside the windows. I long to go to him and comfort him. To tell him I still love him, and everything will be all right. Though I don’t know that, and I won’t lie to him.

I don’t know how or even if everything will be all right. From what Xander has told me, mating is for a lifetime. A bond that – once it is formed – cannot be broken even in death. It’s why he was so adamant about me knowing everything involved in accepting his mark before anything happened. His insistence has only made me love him more, crave him more.

To find out that I’ve already been claimed without my knowledge, and by a man as cruel as Kaleb Rawlins – is devastating. To know that I’ll never be free of him. To know that because of that night, I’ll never be able to be with the one that the goddess has given me, the one person that makes me feel safe and loved. That I’ll never have a life with him, children with him. It is soul-crushing.

    Dahlia?

Kat’s soft words draw my attention to her concerned face. Tears fill her eyes but don’t spill over her porcelain skin. Her voice is gentle but underlaid with so much steel that there is no mistaking the strength and power in this tiny woman.

There’s something you need to know before my brothers tell you the plan to fix this.

I shake my head. There is no fixing it, I sob. He marked me. I know what that means. It means I belong to him. Forever.

"Yes, but," she pauses until I meet her gaze. The emphasis on the last word causes hope to surge through my veins. I snap my eyes to hers, afraid of the disappointment I’ll feel when she confirms my worst fear.

"But, there is a way to break it. However, it will also break your bond with Xan. Even though he hasn’t marked you, the mate bond for fated mates forms early – usually the moment the shifter realizes the person is their mate. Your bond to him began when you acknowledged him as your mate, too."

So you’re saying I’m either stuck with Kaleb but I can have Xander on the side, or I get neither of them? I won’t do that to Xander. I won’t have him as a side piece.

Not exactly, Kat smiles. Though I love that your first thought was of my brother. It just proves how perfect you are for him.

Then what is it, Kat? Please tell me.

She looks at Violet and Everly, a secret message passing between them. More telepathic communication. It’s going to take work to get used to being excluded from conversations that I can’t even hear. The other women smile at me, squeeze my hands, then leave us alone. A moment later, a shower of purple and gold sparkles fall around Kat and me.

"I asked Everly to put a privacy ward around the two of us so that you are the only one to hear this. It is for your ears only. If Xan knew what I’m about to tell you, he’d be livid, but you need to know. Hell, X doesn’t even know I know what happened."

What are you talking about Kat?

She takes my hands, and moments later, I feel the same waves of peace wash over me. Kat is an omega. She shouldn’t be able to do this. Xander said only alphas have this power.

I’m a Chosen One, mated to an alpha, she says in answer to my unasked question. It means our magic fused and I can use his alpha aura when necessary.

Groovy. You’ll have to explain to me what a Chosen One is someday. Right now, you were about to tell me about my mate.

Yes. But first a little background. Wolf shifters can confirm their fated mates once they hit their twenty-first birthday. They may feel a pull toward a person before that, but it cannot be confirmed by their wolf until their birthday.

I nod remembering reading something about that on one of the threads. One girl had been venting that on her birthday, she didn’t magically find her mate the moment she turned twenty-one, while another was lamenting the loss of her boyfriend of three years when he found his mate in another woman while in a club celebrating his birthday. He’d stopped their heavy make-out session in the VIP section of the club when his fated mate sat down at a nearby table. He got up and immediately took up with her. He hadn’t even gotten her name before they started going at it hot and heavy while everyone around watched. The shifters knew what had happened and were happy for the couple. Meanwhile, the girl was heartbroken.

Anyway, Kat draws me back to our conversation. X met Lily in his senior year of college. He’d just turned twenty-one and knew she was his fated mate. It took months of dating before she would even consider a future with him. She was a human, like you. But unlike you, she didn’t accept everything that came with being mated to a shifter. I don’t know where she got her information – another shifter or the internet, perhaps. Not all the information she had was correct, but there was no convincing her. The night he’d planned to mark her, to claim her, she rejected him. Formally, brutally, and in front of a large group of their friends. That was one piece of intel that was, unfortunately, accurate. It was the night before their college graduation.

What! I can’t help my outrage. Not that I wasn’t his first mate. Not that he didn’t tell me, though that stings particularly bad. Especially since I spilled my guts about everything that happened with Kaleb. But what hurts the most is that some woman had the most amazing man on the planet, and she was beyond cruel to him.

He told you what happens when a shifter is rejected by their mate? Kat asks. I can only manage a nod. Inside I’m reeling. Pain and anger are a dark swirling vortex inside me. "What you’re feeling now? It’s how he felt for months after that.

"His wolf took over. He was weeks, maybe days, or even hours from moon madness taking him. As a last-ditch effort to save my brother, I shifted and went looking for him. He’d not yet closed off our pack link. I think a part of him was hoping to salvage things with her. I used our link to track him to a remote corner of our pack lands. He was very thin as if he’d not eaten in weeks. His skin and fur were hanging off him and he was so weak, he could barely stand, let alone shift back to human.

"I quickly caught some small game for him to eat. He needed more than just a few rabbits and squirrels that I’d brought him, but I’m not big enough - even in my wolf form – to bring down anything larger without help. He ate what I brought him and had just enough energy to follow me to one of the cabins we use for visitors. Luckily those cabins are always stocked with canned foods.
