    Chapter One

The sun lay lazily on the horizon casting shadows along the sidewalk and the buildings as I dashed between people trying to make it to the restaurant on time. Dustin hated it when I was late, and tonight was going to be a special night. I knew it. I could feel it.

He'd chosen my favorite restaurant. It all made sense–tonight would be the night.

The sidewalk was bustling with people as they hurried past to get to their designations.

I stopped short of the doorway, straightening my dress and running my fingers through the wind-blown strains of hair.

You look beautiful. As always. A flutter of heat rippled through my stomach as my eyes met Dustin's in the reflection in the window. A small smile spread across my lips, matched by Dustin's. His smell was intoxicating, and I wanted to twist in his arms and meet his lips.

Shall we? His fingers grazed the bare skin on my shoulder, lingering for a beat before making their way down until they spread and flattened against my lower back, guiding us forward toward the door.

The moment was right, and it was all I could do to contain my excitement from bubbling out. Dustin planned the night to a tee, and I wasn't about to disappoint him.

We'd spent hours planning our lives together. When we'd met, I was beginning my journey in medical school with Dustin a few years further ahead. Everything between us aligned perfectly–our families got along well, we were both ambitious, and we shared the same dreams for our futures. In those late nights, when we discussed our future, we decided to wait to get engaged until I finished school, wed within two years, and begin a family when we were both established in our careers. We wanted two children, a house in the suburbs, and a country cottage for a time away from the hustle and bustle of life.

That's why tonight was it. I graduated and accepted a position at New York's most prestigious hospital. Dustin was already working at another New York hospital, not his first choice but the job he'd reluctantly taken was his only offer.

It was a rough stretch when he was only offered one job and there had been a time I didn't know if we'd make it through the bumpy patch. His mood was dismal, and I felt like I was walking on eggshells every time we were together. Eventually, things smoothed out and we settled into a new routine.

The restaurant was hopping, and we were seated in our favorite sections close to the windows where we could people-watch as we ate, and Dustin said he felt less claustrophobic being next to the window and not buried in some corner. Another sign that things were aligned for the big moment.

Lorelei, I've been wanting to talk to you about something important, Dustin stated after the waiter cleared our plates. He never was one for displaying emotions, so it wasn't surprising that he acted businesslike.

I sipped on my wine, fidgeting with anticipation.

    It was time!

I leaned in to listen intently to what he was about to ask.

Everything we wanted together so far has gone almost as planned.

I smiled, waiting patiently for him to get to the main event.

You and I make a good team.

I nodded in response, encouraging him to keep going.

I always thought we'd end up together, but..

    But!

I straightened in the chair, all my defense screaming, my arms naturally crossing across my chest.

    There was a but!

There is no easy way to say this, sweetie, but I'm not sure we're meant to be. He took a sip of his wine and then another. He eyed me up over the rim of his glass, gauging my reaction.

Fireworks went off in my mind, but not the kind that I envisioned I would see tonight.

Say something. Say anything. He reached for my hand that was gripping the napkin I had ripped from my lap after I thought he said we weren't meant to be.

My hand yanked back from his touch like it had a mind of its own.

This isn't working for me anymore. I don't think we should continue seeing each other.

I don't understand. What do you mean? I asked, finally finding my voice.

He sighed in annoyance. I don't think we should keep seeing each other. I want out.

What about our plans? Marriage? kids? Cottage in the country? The power couples? I was trying to wrap my mind around what he was saying, looking back over the last few weeks and months to see how I had drastically misread the clues leading up to tonight.

    Babe...

You don't have the right to call me that anymore! I interrupted him, crossing my arms over my chest.

He stared at me looking hurt. How dare he look hurt when he was the one breaking up with me?

It's about the job, isn't it? He hated the idea that I got a better-paying job, at a better hospital.

He shook his head, gulping his wine. I pushed the chair away from the table. Its legs screeched across the wood floor. I winced at the sound, feeling like it summed up
