      Chapter one

      On The Run

      Freya

      Freya shoved her hands through her long hair, then picked up her pendulum made of amethyst. She needed to do another reading before she continued on her journey. So she sat in the back of the mom-and-pop food joint—the ribs were amazing and melted in her mouth. But now that her energy was up, she needed to figure out where she should go next. Her motto, hidden and patient after Queen Elizabeth of York. The mother of Henry the Eighth was a strong, bad ass woman after all for putting up with being the spoils of war. Not unlike Freya right in this moment.

      Her father had sold her off to some shifter named Steve Athams, who wanted a witch harem to boost his power and strength. The bastard had a destined mate, a bear shifter, but he wanted more. His home was in Jackson, Mississippi, on the edge of town, and he wanted to claim all the south for himself. But Freya wasn’t going to be part of that shit.

      On her trip from Memphis, Tennessee, to meet Steve, her guards gave her no opportunity. Until that night, when Steve forced himself on Freya, saying he was claiming her so no other male would touch her.

      A shiver slid down her spine at the memory; she had a few scars still on her skin from the blitz attack. That night, when he passed out, she slipped away with her bag and three grand. She ran with little direction, and her most recent stop was Lexington, Kentucky. Her funds were running low with every stop, but she needed to eat and needed to sleep somewhere that wasn’t a bus or the stops.

      With the four decks of cards she trusted, she set them in a circle and placed her pendulum in the middle. Which deck needs to speak to me? She sucked in a breath, then slowly blew it out while repeating the question mentally to her pendulum. It wiggled right to wave at the Star Dragons Oracle deck by Palo Barbieri. She set the others aside with the Green Witch Tarot Companion deck on top. The book was bigger than the rest of the ones she’d stashed away, but she still trusted this. Her mother had gifted her the Green Witch deck when she was ten years old. One of the last presents she’d given Freya before her death.

      Tucking the pendulum in her pocket, she scanned the area. Most of the other customers were too engrossed with their own problems and eating with their company to pay her much attention. Her back was to the wall in the very back near the kitchen, giving her a quick escape if she needed to bolt. Pulling at her magic, she shielded herself. Everyone would see her eating another round of ribs with no need of refills from the waitress.

      Grabbing the deck, she shuffled and asked the cards what she needed to know. Then, she pulled three from the top when her hands warmed.

      Card one, Bliss- Cherishing the day. On the card was a dragon playing in the water with a mermaid during the sunset. The first card usually represented the past, and it hit home on just how much had changed when she’d bolted.

      Card two, Legacy-Persistence, representing the present. She smiled at the card. A gray dragon stood tall with a man in front and rubble all around.

      Card three, Effort-Conquering your demons, representing the future. She prayed to the goddess that she could be in a place to feel like her demons were vanquished and firmly in the past. This pull was giving her a rush because it felt like a better omen, that good things were coming her way. She adjusted her black hair behind her ear.

      As she placed the cards back in the box, her hands warmed over the Green Witch deck. She shuffled and pulled a card, the curiosity getting the best of her.

      Knight of Chalices, or cups in other decks. Her heart leapt into her throat. She didn’t need the damn book to know what this meant. Socializing was needed to achieve the last spread, and it could also be the death of her. Hidden and patient had kept her alive. Tomorrow, maybe then she’d find someone to talk to.
