    Editor’s Preface

This is the fifth booklet in the uniquely relaxed Lazy Lama series. It is based on a talk given by Ringu Tulku Rinpoché at Kagyu Benchen Ling in Freiburg, Germany, 1998, at the invitation of Chime Rinpoché and his students.

We would like to thank Ringu Tulku himself for the simple but profound wisdom contained in this booklet. It is wisdom that is much yearned for and much needed in our world at this time.

    Living without fear and anger

People often ask me how Buddhist teachings can help them in their day-to-day lives. What is there in the ancient teachings of the Buddha that can be of relevance to our modern world? The Buddha taught how it is possible to find peace and happiness despite the many problems we face in our lives, and, in particular, how we can deal with our negative emotions. In Buddhist scriptures these are sometimes described as mind-poisons, because they can poison our whole outlook on life. How can we stop this from happening?

In this small booklet, I will discuss ways in which we can learn to deal with two of the most destructive mind-poisons, ones which are very closely linked with each other: fear and anger. To begin with let’s look at anger and what we can do when we get angry.

    Fighting injustice and anger

Many people believe that anger isn’t always negative and that, in certain circumstances, it is actually good to be angry. I’ve had many debates over the years with people who say that without anger we wouldn’t have the energy to fight injustice, and it’s sometimes difficult to argue that this view is completely wrong. However, from the Buddhist perspective, being angry is never positive, because when we are taken over by anger we lose our self-control and our capacity to make well-judged decisions.
