    Introduction

Chronic conditions like Alzheimer's, cancer, diabetes, infertility, cardiovascular disease, autoimmunity, mood disorders, and chronic pain have skyrocketed in recent decades. Many of these diagnoses are happening to women, who are often given a one-size-fits-all solution that rarely takes into account their hormonal needs. This has left many women feeling unheard and sick. One woman, who experienced chronic fatigue at 19, found solace in her mother's advice to change her diet. The holistic medical doctor recommended a ketogenic diet, which led to a significant shift in her body's energy, brain clarity, weight loss, and a decrease in depressive symptoms.

The author has since studied and tested various diet fads and spent 25 years in the health trenches with thousands of patients. The research has shown that poor metabolic health, or metabolic syndrome, is the root cause of many chronic diseases. Poor metabolic health is often referred to as a person's ability to regulate their blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol without the use of medications. Poor metabolic health not only leads to chronic disease but also compromises the immune system.

The study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill revealed that only 12 percent of Americans are metabolically healthy. Over 800 million people worldwide currently live with obesity, with childhood obesity predicted to increase by 60% in the coming decade, reaching 250 million by 2030. The medical costs associated with this rise in obesity are expected to exceed $1 trillion by 2025. Metabolic health is a growing concern globally, with the COVID-19 pandemic highlighting the need for a more comprehensive approach to prevent and treat metabolic challenges like obesity. Fasting, an ancient health tool, has been shown to be the quickest path back to better health, with numerous studies proving its efficacy. Fasting has been shown to help with weight loss, high blood pressure, insulin resistance, inflammation, lowering cholesterol, repair the gut microbiome, improve neurodegenerative diseases, reboot a struggling immune system, and power up happiness neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and GABA.

However, there is a significant blind spot in the scientific evidence that fasting heals, especially for women. A one-size-fits-all approach to fasting is not working, especially for women. The length of fasting, the best foods to pair with fasting, and the importance of fasting in sync with hormonal cycles are all important questions. Women are highly influenced by the monthly and menopausal swings of hormones, and fasting should be done in sync with these hormones.

However, many fasting books teach a one-size-fits-all approach, leaving women with more questions than answers. Women often need to know when and how to fast differently than men, as fasting can resolve many conditions women are struggling with, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), IUDs with little evidence of a menstrual cycle, and infertility. Addressing these specific needs is crucial for a successful fasting lifestyle. The author,
