Introduction
Prayers can become a great adventure of faith if we learn how to partner with the Holy Spirit to see prayers answered with God’s astounding results. We are introduced to prayer from day one of our born-again Christian experience. We were told to pray and taught to pray as well. We know that praying is essential, but we struggle to do it consistently. At best, we say our prayers before meals and sleep, but we do not see many results and changes to crises and life’s struggles. Our prayers are relegated to a dull, ritualistic routine. Discouragement starts to set in when our prayers go unanswered, and we even doubt their value. We may not want to admit it, but regrettably, all these seem so true.
I remember that as a teenager, I would feel compelled to pray, but I ran out of the right
words to say to God. Somehow, I thought God probably might respond better if I had the right words and perfected my English. That frustrated me because I would feel profoundly intense but had no words to express them.
Then, one day, while alone in the house, I suddenly raised my voice and shouted at God. I demanded that He should respond to me and not ignore me anymore. It was hilarious as I recalled how I faced that blank wall and ranted at His non-responsiveness to my prayers. I was desperate to know He had heard and would speak to me audibly. After many years, I understood that prayer holds a deeper meaning beyond mere words and a to-do list for God. Prayer is a dialogue rather than a monologue. It is a 2-way communication in which God wants us to know His heart and responses to our feelings and requests. And He communicates with us in a myriad of ways.
Over time, I have learned that God is not so concerned with my words as my heart. He speaks in universal languages, and my language never hinders what He can do for me through my prayers. I have also discovered that prayer can be very effective when we pray according to God’s will. Many do not pray effective prayers or see results because they do not understand God's will. Instead of God’s will, we pray according to our selfish desires. No wonder our prayers seem to go unanswered no matter how hard we may pray.
