Chapter 2: Gut health
Gut health is vital to overall wellness. The word 'gut health' refers to the total health of your gastrointestinal tract, including the bacteria that make up that system. Your gastrointestinal system transports food from your mouth to your stomach, absorbs the nutrients and energy it contains, and excretes the rest. That's a hefty job in and of itself, but science has demonstrated that our stomachs are involved in a lot more than just breaking down the avocado toast we ate for breakfast: we now know that our guts play a role in everything from immunity to chronic illness to brain health and even how we deal with stress.
While it may not appear to be spectacular, the gut houses 70% of our immune system. It's where we generate nutrients, metabolize hormones and detoxify enzymes, neutralize pathogens, and produce neurotransmitters. So, it's critical to take care of your digestive system if you want to feel well.
Our guts are now missing so many of the good bacteria essential to be healthy as a result of our highly-processed diet, pesticides, and abuse of antibiotics. As a result, many of us have lost control of our health, weight, mood, and even behavior.
Healthy Stomach
The first thing to consider is what a healthy stomach
actually entails. Is there a list of bacteria that must be present in exact proportions to ensure that your gut is healthy? That's not the case. When it comes to gut health, we analyze if it is doing all of the duties it should do, rather than assessing whether it has a precise balance of bacteria and other microbes. What we do know is that the more diverse the bacteria in your gut, the more health benefits you will experience.
And in order to do its job properly, your gut relies on its army of bacteria, fungi, and other microbes.
Fun fact: The bacteria in and on your body could outweigh your human cells, with roughly 39 million microbial cells to 30 million human cells.
These minuscule cells only account for about 3% of our body weight, but their contributions to general health greatly outweigh the physical space they occupy on and in our bodies. The microbiome is a system of bacteria and other microorganisms that we will discuss in more detail in the next chapters. Inside your stomach, there are good and nasty germs, just like in any society.
Gut health can fluctuate between people of different body proportions, suggesting a relationship between gut health and obesity
