      Do You Need a Little Christmas?

      The fireplace in the parlor at Longbourn crackled merrily, signaling the coming Christmas holiday. Those of us left at the Bennet ancestral home had been gathered together, enjoying a cup of tea and discussing the unexpected snow. But I certainly never expected to be standing in front of my mother and aunt, clutching a piece of parchment as delicate as a snowflake. The messenger abandoned the invitation with our housekeeper, Mrs. Hill, and left before she could examine it. It was only after the lad was long gone that I realized the invitation was intended for my eldest sister, Jane.

      And Jane was in Paris with our father and her intended husband, Charles Bingley.

      The grand event detailed was far beyond the realms of my simple existence in Meryton. The invitation was for an exquisite Christmas celebration weekend hosted by none other than Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy. It was no surprise that it was intended for Jane, surely a more suitable candidate for such grandeur than the unmarried second daughter of a country squire. Now that she was the fiancé of Mr. Bingley, Jane would certainly attend many events like this. But me? Certainly not.

      My fingers traced the embossed script on the cream-colored paper, the words like a tantalizing melody to a grand musical performance I never thought I would never hear. 

      This Christmas, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy requests the pleasure of your company…
