Lee Hacklyn Private Investigator in Office Space Invaders - John Leister
QUEENS, NEW YORK CITY. 1986.
CHAPTER ONE
And now, without further ado, here’s your Valedictorian for the Graduating Class of 1986, Gretchen Hacklyn!
Thunderous applause.
There was some booing and hissing, too.
I wanted to stand, draw my Browning, pointed it at them and announce, That’s my niece you’re disrespecting,
but didn’t.
I was sitting on a bleacher seat, the top row, in a gymnasium, with my sister, Ann, Gretchen’s mother and her husband, Geoff, Gretchen’s father.

Gretchen was clad in leather from head-to-toe.
She had her diploma in one hand and a purse was slung over her shoulder.

Alison Hacklyn, she who birthed Ann and I, our mother, was sitting next to me.
If you can make it through the night without killing anyone, I might update my will and include your name. How does a dollar sound?
You look beautiful, Mom.
Save that for your bar hussies.
Gretchen hated guns, but she sure knew how to defend herself. She had a black belt in Shotokan Karate. She was very beautiful, but most of the other boys were terrified of her. I couldn’t blame them.
She walked up to the podium and cleared her throat before speaking into the microphone.
The teachers were sitting together and most of them looked dreadfully unhappy.
The principal, a supercilious dweeb named Dudley Duright, poor guy, was compulsively adjusting
