    First Story: Pocket Merfolk

    Joe Scay, an asexual man in his twenties, hated how merfolk, a tiny sentient species discovered in the last ten years, were being dehumanized. They resembled the ones from a 1989 Dipney film, but were six inches long (when measured from the top of their heads to the tips of their tails), had webbed fingers with cling pads, a soft dorsal fin on the backs of their human upper bodies (the fin was deep blue like their tail fluke and the fins on their forearms, with light blue scales like those of their tails bordering the fin and their human skin), were chubby to keep warm, and could breathe oxygen both in the air and dissolved in water.

    Even though they could be as intelligent as humans, they were still sold as pets. Knowing this, Joe decided to get one, but not as a pet. Rather, he was hoping to take home a young one that he could be like a father to.

    When he arrived and found the merfolk, he saw a young girl who seemed to be more willing to interact with humans than the others in her tank. Her hair was red with subtle hints of green, purple, and blue, her skin was pale, and she was young and a mere two inches long.  As she swam, Joe realized that her hair went behind her as she swam and flowed a lot in water.

    Joe decided that she would be his daughter. He bought her with his own money, and when she was being transported to a temporary bag, she went in
