      Foreword

      Annie Dillard in her book The Writing Life speaks about writing as laying out a line of words. This line of words is like a miner's pick, a woodcarver's gouge, and a surgeon's probe. Dillard elaborates a bit more: the words that the writer chooses become a path to follow that would eventually bring the writer deep into new territory.

      Thoughts and Letters is exactly, as Dillard describes, our author's exploration of new territories—different topics and themes yet unified by the same passion. Abbreviated perspectives and compressed thoughts are attempts to capture big ideas and vast realities.

      Where the author comes from is an important context that our readers should start with. All text after all has a context. In fact, without context, no text would really mean anything.
