Cursed Crochet - Ulysses Press
INTRODUCTION
In the fall of 2022, OpenAI released a large language model chatbot called ChatGPT. It was immediately heralded as the artificial intelligence that would change the world of search, data, writing, research, and content creation as we knew it. Users could talk
to ChatGPT, ask it to do many incredible things, and get detailed answers. Everything from What would a detailed itinerary of a ten-day trip to France as a solo traveler look like?
to Write me a five-paragraph essay on fate versus free will in Romeo and Juliet
was game (much to the chagrin of travel agents and teachers). In 2022, were the resulting outputs amazing? No. But they were pretty darn good.
But the internet and a community of crafters quickly found one area ChatGPT really hasn’t figured out: crochet. Creating adorable plushie crochet characters (often called amigurumi) is extremely popular, not too difficult, and patterns can be found all over the internet for free. But without that human element troubleshooting and designing the patterns, ChatGPT cannot even come close to writing amigurumi crochet patterns. For the most part the instructions were sound, but the final products? Monstrous creations. Cursed objects. Hilariously wrong. And, in some cases, strangely cute.
The editors at Ulysses Press couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see just how deranged AI crafting could get, and we present you with Cursed Crochet. This is a collection of the worst-best crochet patterns created by a chatbot. We input prompt after prompt asking, Can you write me a simple, worsted weight yarn amigurumi crochet pattern for ________________?
(We usually asked for an iconic character, beloved childhood toy, or simple animal.) Whatever we got, we made.
Inside you’ll find giraffes without necks (one of the things that actually makes a giraffe, a giraffe), a bright green Goofy (strangely topped with a beret?), a narwhal with a pathetic tooth, and more.
While the patterns are entirely credited to ChatGPT, our team of spunky editors at Ulysses Press have written the quirky, astonished, and hilarious commentary throughout. Human credit goes to them.
WARNING!
Once again, these patterns were generated by a computer and are definitely wrong. We’ve done some light editing to remove instructions that made no sense and have standardized some terms. For the most part, the patterns will make something, but don’t be surprised if counts are slightly off. Use your human intelligence to work around these quirks!
Also, in the spirit of these less-than-professional patterns, we need to note that we are less-than-professional crocheters. Our monsters from the upside-down are made with acrylic yarn and photographed at our offices. If you’re looking for patterns that make sense, please pick up a book written by a much more talented yarn worker. But, if you’re looking for something born of chaos, you’re in the right place.
SUPPLIES
Each pattern lists the supplies you’ll need to create your creature, but, in general, some of the things you should have on hand include:
medium-weight (4) worsted weight yarn
crochet hooks of various sizes (usually G and F are used)
safety eyes
stitch markers
fiberfill stuffing
yarn needle (for weaving in ends and sewing pieces together)
scissors
BASIC SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES
You’ll need to know how to do basic crochet stitches for this book, and we suggest you head over to YouTube to find tutorials. Beyond basic stitches, the key techniques to have down (or look up) to create your perfectly imperfect stuffed creature include:
making a magic ring
working in continuous rounds
using stitch markers
weaving in the ends
changing yarn colors
using basic embroidery techniques
using safety eyes
Almost all the patterns in the book are worked in continuous rounds and don’t need to be joined after each row. We’ve put all the assembly instructions at the bottom of each pattern, but make sure to read through and use your best judgment on joining and adding features like eyes, embroidery, and beyond.
ABBREVIATIONS
Some of the common crochet pattern abbreviations that you will find throughout this book and what they mean:
ch = chain
st(s) = stitch(es)
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
tr = triple crochet
inc = increase (2 sc in same st)
dec = decrease (single crochet 2 stitches together)
sl st = slip stitch
ch-2 = chain made of 2 chains (ch-3 = a chain made of 3 chains, and so on)
OOPA
(APPA)
Water. Earth. Fire. Air. You don’t have to be the Avatar, master of all four elements, to crochet this silly ChatGPT version of everyone’s favorite sky bison. He doesn’t have eyes, which is troubling for a creature that doubles as transportation, but he does have a big bright blue nose, which is a strange, Rudolph-esque choice. While he might not be a great navigator, you will gain a lifelong companion, so get ready to say, Oopa, yip yip!
