About this ebook

After too many decades in the heat and swampy humidity of Washington, D.C., a woman convinces her husband to move with her back to where she was born.

But when they settle in rural Minnesota, she faces the worst winter anyone has known in a century. And with her husband still working in D.C., she faces it alone.

Alone, except for a neighbor who doesn’t speak much, but is always willing to help out with his Bobcat.

But his knowledge of the woman’s roots might be worth more than a dozen snowplows. If she can just figure out how to use it.

“Winter’s End,” a modern fantasy short story about the magic that still lurks in hidden places.

    WINTER'S END

Once, on one of our early anniversaries, my husband and I had gone to Iceland for a long weekend. We soaked in the waters of the Blue Lagoon, sat up late each night hoping for a glimpse of the Northern Lights, and even taken a day trip to explore ice caves on top of one of the glaciers.

That trip was when I had first learned about ice cleats. Walking on a glacier, especially in the caves with many chutes down to oblivion that are barely roped off from the main path, they were a lifesaver.

I just never expected to need them just to check my mail.

Or to stay upright while shoveling yet another fresh six inches of snow off the pack of hard ice that never relinquished its hold on my driveway. Especially not the bottom hundred and fifty feet, the part that ran from the dirt road, under the thick if currently bare branches of all our many trees, and over the culvert that in the spring would be a roaring stream of rushing water.

I was the one who wanted to move back to Minnesota, the magical world of my early childhood I had left behind midway through kindergarten and had never been back to. But my husband had been totally on board. He was ready for a change, too.

And when we had been house-shopping, I had been the one who had fallen in love with it at first sight. I freely admit that. But after a decade living in a townhouse in D.C. with the bustling sidewalk of a busy street right outside our front
