    History and Evolution of ADHD

The history of ADHD is a testament to how medical understanding evolves over time. The earliest descriptions of behaviors now associated with ADHD date back to the early 1900s. Sir George Still, a British pediatrician, described children who exhibited significant behavioral issues, which he termed as defect of moral control. These children displayed symptoms that are now recognized as hyperactivity and impulsivity.

In the 1930s, Dr. Charles Bradley made a groundbreaking discovery when he observed that the stimulant medication Benzedrine had a calming effect on hyperactive children. This finding laid the foundation for the use of stimulant medications in treating what would eventually be recognized as ADHD.

The condition was formally identified as Hyperkinetic Impulse Disorder in the 1960s, a term that emphasized the hyperactive aspect of the disorder. However, by the 1980s, it became clear that inattention was also a significant component. The American Psychiatric Association included Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) in 1980, with two subtypes: with and without hyperactivity.

In 1987, the term was revised to Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in the DSM-III-R, and the distinction between ADD and ADHD was removed. The DSM-IV, published in 1994, introduced three subtypes of ADHD: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and combined type. This classification helped clinicians better understand and diagnose the various presentations of ADHD.

Recent decades have seen significant advancements in the understanding of ADHD, particularly with regard to its neurological underpinnings. Research has identified differences in brain structure and function in individuals with ADHD, highlighting the disorder's biological basis. Genetic studies have also underscored the heritability of ADHD, indicating that it often runs in families.
