    1 – Mänty / Pine / Pinus sylvestris

    Rooted Resilience

    Longevity | Roots | Boundaries

Majestic pines have served as both sacred and places to make offerings to ancestors and spirits for many families. The pine was used also as karsikkopuu, a carving tree, where the initials of the deceased dear ones were inscribed and the branches pruned. The carving tree was not only a memorial but also the boundary between the living and the dead, which the deceased were not allowed to cross.

After a successful bear hunt, a feast was held in honor of the bear. The bear's bones were buried like a human's, but its skull was placed in a special pine, karhunkallohonka (bear skull pine), after the feast. The bear's soul would ascend from there back to the heavens, to the constellation Ursa Major--the Great Bear--part of the Big Dipper. There, according to Finnish beliefs, the bear was reborn and would descend back to this world to begin a new life.

In Finnish mythology, Hongotar is the spirit of the pine tree and the protector of bears. The oldest known tree in Finland is over 800 years old, a small pine tree growing in the wilderness of Lapland.

    Ritual

The pine tree reminds us that we live in the middle world, keskinen, the world of the living. The stronger we grow our roots, the higher we can reach, and the more resilient we become. Know that the ancestors guide you, and guardian spirits are offering unseen support. Yet, remember, you are the protector of your own domain. Set healthy boundaries, deciding who and what energies you allow into your sacred space. Like the mighty pine, stand and be strong.

    Message

To commune with the essence of the pine, find a pine tree and sit with your back against its sturdy trunk. If one is not within reach, close your eyes and visualize yourself seated in the comforting shadow of a pine. Take a deep breath and feel your roots extend deep into the underworld, or Alinen, which connects us to the world of the departed. Cast your gaze upward, witnessing the branches reaching towards Ylinen, the realm of the Gods and Goddesses. Feel how you are part of a timeless and eternal continuum between these different levels, above and below.

    2 – Haapa

    Listener of Sorrows

    Gentle | Innocent | Sensitive

The aspen is a sacred tree, a good listener and healer of sorrow, whose leaves rustle in the wind in a unique way, bringing both comfort and joy amidst sadness or anxiety.

In terms of biodiversity, the aspen is a true tree of life: hundreds of different insect, lichen and fungus species live in the shelter of its soft sanctuary, and it provides nesting sites for many cavity nesters.

Aspen has been used medicinally for various ailments, including fever and skin disinfection.

Haapa, the Finnish word for aspen, is an ancient Finno-Ugric word and related to the word haapio. Haapio originally meant a dugout canoe carved from a single aspen tree. Haapio boats were already in use in the Stone Age, and the boat type is known among many
