The most recent Gray Zone Warfare patch is being rolled back and the development team has apologised after performance took a hit with the most recent update.
Gray Zone Warfare hotfix 5.2 launched earlier this week and was almost immediately met with complaints of poor performance from many members of the community, despite all hotfixes being beta tested prior to launch.
Many players reported crashes as soon as they booted up Gray Zone Warfare after the hotfix patch went live, while those who did manage to get in reported significant frame rate drops compared to before the patch. This was not limited to just one or two players, with a lot of players complaining about the issues on social media and in the game’s official Discord server.
Today Marek Rabas, the CEO of developer MADFINGER Games, has apologised for the issues with the patch and announced that it will be rolled back while the team works on a new version without the performance issues.
“Hi Guys, please accept our apologies,” said Rabas. “We released a hotfix that introduced new issues to the game. We're going to roll back and will issue a new hotfix soon. We messed up mostly because we didn't trust our community when they reported performance issues. We couldn't reproduce it on our end, and after checking every commit, we were sure none of the fixes could affect client performance. This was a big mistake; it turned out to be a wrong merge, and unwanted changes were propagated to the hotfix branch. We have multiple branches, not only for the game but also for Unreal Engine, etc. So, lesson learned the hard way. We will always trust our community from now on and improve our pipelines to limit these problems. Please excuse us; we will do better next time.”
While the issues with the patch obviously are not great for anyone, it is refreshing to see a development team come out and admit that they got it wrong. Hopefully, this will be an experience the team will learn from and going forward better testing will take place when it comes to new updates.
For anyone who hasn’t played Gray Zone Warfare yet, I’d certainly recommend it as the game has been great outside of the issues with this patch. There are a few changes it still needs to make, but once you get into the swing of things and start figuring out how to complete the difficult quests it becomes an incredible tactical shooter experience.
