Biden calls into MSNBC show, says he's 'not going anywhere'

President Biden directly took on his party critics who want him to leave the 2024 White House race, saying he's "not going anywhere."

President Biden called into MSNBC’s "Morning Joe" on Monday and defiantly proclaimed that he would be staying in the 2024 presidential race.

"The bottom line here is that we’re not going anywhere. I am not going anywhere," Biden told hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough, both avid White House supporters.

"I wouldn’t be running if I didn’t absolutely believe that I am the best candidate to beat Donald Trump in 2024," he said. "We had a democratic nominating process where the voters spoke clearly. I won 14 million of those votes."

After Brzezinski introduced Biden as the "presumptive Democratic nominee," the president laughed and boldly stated, "I’m more than the presumptive. I’m going to be the nominee."

Biden, via telephone from the White House, noted that he has been traveling on the road over the last 10 days to make sure his "instinct" was right about the Democratic Party still wanting him as the nominee. He has faced calls from media allies and members of his own party to step aside after his halting debate showing and behind-the-scenes reports of mental and cognitive decline.

He also suggested that he has been traveling around the country to dispel the notion that former President Trump has made substantial gains among voters since the June 27 debate. 

Asked by Brzezinski about his brutal debate and how he could assure it wouldn't happen again, Biden said, "Look at my career. I have not had many of those nights. It was a terrible night and I really regret it happened."

Despite concerns about his ability to win re-election, Biden noted that he defeated Trump in 2020 and would beat him again.  

"He’s just a liar and he hasn’t done a damn thing since the debate. He’s been riding around in a golf cart for ten days down in Mar-a-Lago talking with his wealthy friends," Biden said.

The fallout from the debate has led numerous prominent industry leaders, politicians, media outlets, pundits, and columnists to call for Biden to pass the baton and allow a new Democratic figure to emerge as the nominee.

The long list of people who have turned on Biden did not appear to sway the president’s determination to run again. Brzezinski listed off elite newspapers like the New York Times, as well as key Democratic Party figures like ex-Obama adviser David Axelrod, who said it's time for him to step aside.

"I don’t care what those big names said," Biden told "Morning Joe." "They were wrong in 2020. They were wrong in 2022 about the red wave. They’re wrong in 2024 and come out with me and watch people react. You make a judgment."

Biden predicted that the average American would not move away from him in the upcoming election and threw cold water on claims that he is losing support among Black voters. 

"Remember about all this talk about how I don’t have the Black support. Give me a break. Come with me. Watch. Watch!" Biden shouted. 

"I’m getting frustrated by the elites — not you guys — the elites in the party, oh, they know so much more. Any of these guys that don’t think I should run, run against me. Announce for president, challenge me at the convention."
